Which will age better, realistic graphics or stylized graphics? And why.
As the title states, which will age better? This includes video games and animated movies ONLY. SHARE this discussion if you can to your friends, I have a research paper on graphics and it's due in 3 days.

Thank you.

Stylized, if you ask me. "Realistic" always starts looking very uncanny valley-esque with time.

3 days tho? That's a tight deadline if you've only started to gather data.

I already collected some data on another site, thanks though.
Stylized, really. Realistic approaches tend to fail in the end.

Stylized. That’s why I enjoy art and seeing other people’s styles. Not all art is the same. If all art is the same and realistic then it would be boring.

This is why I love cartoons.

Borderlands will stand the test of time for another decade to come due to being stylized. Realistic type graphics made only 6 years ago are looking dated compared to new realistic graphics.

But some games wouldn't work if they were realistic or stylized. Think of it this way, could team fortress II work if it was realistic ?

Stylized like Borderlands. Even now it looks great, Realistic graphics tend to not look nearly as real 5 years later...kinda like the whole "ignorance is bliss" thing. You don't know what you're missing untl there's something that has it.

TF2 still looks great. Fallout 3 isn't looking so great anymore. The Polar Express attempted realistic CG but nowadays looks more like a cutscene for a PS3 game. While we haven't had terribly many well-stylized CG films until recent, I'm pretty certain Hotel Transylvania will still look great in a decade.

It's already a fact that stylized ages better than realistic.

"realistic" is a constantly changing concept, and realistic tends to look less so in a decade, but a game with an art style can still be decent looking in the future (at worst case, once the texture resolution has been upped)

Stylized all the way, because there's always gonna be newer tech that helps realistic styles look better. Therefore older realistic styles are always gonna look "less than", because it lacked the newer tech.

depends , if realistic is done well , it will age well , take final fantasy 13 for example , that game doesnt look like its already almost 9 years old at all , same with batman arkham asylum , but theres also games that tried to be realistic that aged horribly

Stylized graphic is more pleasant, more interesting and it is going to age much better because it has nothing to be compared to, you have to take it "as is" and it is meant to look exactly like that.
Realistic graphics have always something to be compared to, real life and also more recent realistic graphics, and will always look outdated compared to those so it is inevitably going to age bad or at least look outdated at some point.

even in 720p the graphics in the game still look good to this day in 4k it looks alot better
its just a matter of making graphics able to upscale well to higher resolutions and still look good

Stylized. Realism will look dated in a few years.

I mean, it depends. For something like Final Fantasy Kingsglaive, I'm pretty sure it'll never look dated :goggles:
That thing looks so real I had to remind myself this was all CG, which I never had to do before :goggles:

This is like asking to choose between a club and a lightsabre.
