what i think a console needs is first it needs to have at least the same graphical capabilities of its competitors, and its controller should have a similar number of button and axis'.. why? because when developing a game for console, if the xbox and PS have the same number of buttons, triggers, and axis', youre designing a game to use them.. then off some other council comes along missing a few youre probably not going to waste your time redesigning your game just to pander to that.. its probably why the PS4 and xbox one are so well matched in performance, and the touchpad on the PS4 controller being the odd-ball feature is almost never used in cross platform games
the other thing a console needs as mentioned above is good exclusives.. you have to have games that make people WANT to go out and buy your console.. halo, forza, etc do it for the xbox, mario and zelda do it for the nintendo, sonic just didnt do it for the later sega consoles and probably the sole reason i havent owned a playstation console since the PS2 is none of its exclusives do it for me, and all non exclusive games were available on the xbox as well.. so, no point
