Why is pop music these days so bad, and why do people like it?

Pop music has been likeable and unlikeable, and like most genres, are changing for the mainstream. You say you liked the pop music from 10 years ago, but at the same time there was another group or generation of people that didn't like that pop music from 10 years ago, they say 20 years ago was better as an example. The story repeats itself with new and old generations.

Good thing is, you don't have to care if you don't like popmusic. People said that 5 years ago, 10 years ago, it is nothing new. You'll always remember a few gems out there.

It's impossible not to encounter it though, because everyone else seems to be playing it. I don't want to have heard Despacito, but I have.

To be fair, it is latin. I listen to a good bunch of latin songs and Despacito isn't necessarily cancer in my ears... but I do understand the reason why people are annoyed.

Kind of, not really. It's mostly directed at pop music, not music in general. Remember that he said he liked piano music, and his example was a song that was made just a few years ago (I think).

Pop in 2018 is good aswell, maybe not the "golden age" right now, but not every year has to be great. For example 2009-2010 was insanely good, while 1-2 years prior were .. meh.

I'm still impressed that those piano melodies get millions of views. I've found piano music that I'd consider better, but most of it gets less than 100k views.

I both agree and disagree with that video. I'm pretty sure he's responding to Thoughty2's rant on pop music, but he's missing the main point of his rant. He omitted the concept of timbre variation in music. That's a determining factor in what affects the quality of music.
