If you meant that check, well if you uncheck I think windows sonic / dobly atmos won't work despite being selected.
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/desktop/CoreAudio/spatial-sound
"The “Turn on 7.1 virtual surround sound” (Windows) or “Use virtual surround in apps” (Xbox) checkbox allows all existing applications that were capable of rendering to 5.1 or 7.1 channel formats to now treat headphones as a virtual 7.1 device."
However, it still does not 'directly' answer whether or not it "has to" be on/selected/checked or not...
- When you select Windows Sonic or Dolby Atmos, the checkbox is checked
- When you select Defaults, with Windows Sonic or Dolby Atmos, the checkbox is not checked
So, I would fall back on the 'Official Response I got from DOLBY' when I asked them:
"try it both on and off for your headset and see which sounds better to you"
Really, just try it both ways and use whichever sounds better to you..
[For me, some games and movies sound crazy with it turned on (center/voice is messed, too many effects, etc) and for other games and movies it sounds better with it on - so really, use it when you think it sounds better]
Perhaps if you check the 7.1 you have to select 7.1/5.1 in game and with 7.1 unchecked you have to select stereo.
That is what I wanted to know, if sonic still works with 7.1 unchecked.
The first time you select sonic from
https://www.howtogeek.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/img_5b293541e99ee.png
the 7.1 is unchecked.
No matter what you select you need to have stereo set in game. You cant creature virtual/simulated sound from a surround sound signal. Doing so will make it sound like s*** and sounds wont be clear as to the direction they should be coming from.
If you spent a few minutes checking a toggle you'd hear it yourself. Instead of commenting and showing you still dont under stand that fact that has been told to you multiple times

As I posted with the image; '... this question was asked in a Steam Discussion about whether or not the checkbox for "7.1 virtual surround sound" should be selected or not. At the time, I was sending emails back and forth with Dolby Support and was getting answers of 'use whatever sounds better for your headset' - which makes sense; each model in each brand of every set of headphones has different capabilities and manufacturing limitations and can indeed sound different from the next. While helpful advice, I had submitted a Feedback Comment at their website, that said that the App did not specifically address this checkbox in Windows 10 (and whether or not it should be 'ticked'). I looked recently at the Dolby App again (near the end of 2018) and found that a diagram, showing the answer, to whether the 7.1 Surround Sound checkbox should be selected/ticked or not was now present; and wanted to share it with you all, here. (My Headset Properties, shown on Right) HTH'
Although I would still add, 'just in case', to try both ways with whatever headphones you are utilizing, to 'make sure' that you are getting what sounds the best, to YOU - as suggested by Dolby themselves. Regardless, I hope this helps clear it up a bit.
Sound card's software = stereo with the equalizer disabled as it can interfere with audio virtualization;
Game = 7.1 or 5.1;
Dolby/Sonic = enabled with 7.1 virtual surround sound checked.
If you don't want to disable the equalizer you can use realtek virtual surround or buy a sound card with 7.1 virtualization or buy 7.1 USB headphones.
I still have some doubts and I'm still talking with them, I will let you know.
P.S. I found some games that don't have the surround settings on the menu but they can still send surround sound, probably they check the audio source.
I find I have to change it based on the game (Dolby/Sonic perhaps functioning differently based on the game's sound engine?).
I personally liked Razer's Surround Pro as well, which came with a Gamepad I received as a gift, as it had configurable sliders that I could change, based on the source and if I wanted more Bass/Treble..). I don't use it all the time, though.
I got a new set of headphones for Xmas from Santa last year and the "7.1 Button" on the usb cable connector (Hardware-Based Surround, as it is 'its own soundcard') works well, too - I've been using that mostly, since then - so if anyone has that on the cable that came with their headphones/headset, don't worry about purchasing extra Software for Surround! heh
Anyway, just wanted to help a bit more with what I found. GL with it,all
With the 7.1 virtual surround you need to set the game to 7.1 or 5.1, if you set the game to stereo it will use stereo sound.
I have 5.1 speakers, if I set the game to stereo it will send stereo sound, same thing with the headphones if you use the 7.1 virtual surround you "transform" your headphones into a 7.1 device:
"The “Turn on 7.1 virtual surround sound” (Windows) or “Use virtual surround in apps” (Xbox) checkbox allows all existing applications that were capable of rendering to 5.1 or 7.1 channel formats to now treat headphones as a virtual 7.1 device".
I recommend using open headphones, they work better for spatial sound.
