Why do we have to pay for online in consoles?

PS4 is nice and all but they make you pay money for online for some unknown reason. why consoles in particular are the ones that do this anyways?

Running that stuff, especially enough of it all over the world to keep, say, the 70.4 million PS4s that have been sold, online for games and file sharing. You don't need to be a highly intelligent person to understand this point, steam works almost exactly the same way as sony or microsoft, a platform for you to buy and play games. If steam can afford free online acess, so can sony and microsoft, not to mention that unlike sony and microsoft, steam actually pays for servers on games like cs go and dota 2 witch are like on the top 5 of the most played games on steam.
Don't defend anti consumer behavior, it helps nobody else but the companies who keep doing it.

60 dollars a year is not cheap, that is like 3 triple a games on steam, probably 5 on the summer sale or christmas sale. The games you get for free, are also laughable, alot of them are bad.

somany assumptions, my my. I had a ps3 back in the day, played most of the "classics" the last of us, uncharted, red dead and the cods before cod went became crap somewhere after bo2. The last of us and red dead are pretty decent games but nothing i haven't played before on pc, they are not unique experiences, they are all third person action adventure games with stealth elements and the only thing that is different about those games is the story, nothing else.

destiny 2 is not a good game, not even a decent one but ok, god of war 3 is pretty good.
You are still playing for those games tho, nothing is for free.

Such a fall from gaming grace, but you haven't a long lineage in consoles. So yes I can see how gaming peasantry should come more natural to one such as you.

they arent free , you pay $60 for them , also digital games technically have no value , sony can just print out more keys as they please , doesnt cost them anything to give these games away , you dont get to chose the games either , idk about now , but most games i got on 360 except fable 3 was awful , tons of small no name games no one cared about


my main issue with online subscriptions , you pay in advance , you dont know if something happens in that year , you have to pay $60 at first , games coming out might end up delayed , or not good ( look at battlefield 5 )

recently when rainbow six siege had the renown event i overplayed the game for good , i dont really play anything online right now , might start tf2 again once i can trade my keys

or maybe ill just focus on my single player games for once , i still havent beaten more than 3 ac games , or arkham origins , or any far cry games

i can still play online fine , without having to pay a $60 fee for something when i decided to focus on single player games

also , my 6th year on steam started 2 months ago back then i would have said i want to play online , even though i quit league in may already , wouldnt have thought i would get this bored of online games

if they give away gow 3 , they know some will buy gow 4 ( i think 4 is the newest ) even though they havent heard of the franchise before

if the games were not just a small bonus so paying to play online doesnt seem as stupid , they would let you play tons of games for free like origins access , i think you dont even get to keep the games

so technically you pay a subscription to rent games , lets imagine something , you pay for ps plus for the next 10 years , and then you lose your job for whatever reason and are rather poor and need to see how to pay for everything , and therefor you arent able to pay for a premium service like ps plus

all games you got over 10 years are gone , meanwhile if you get 1000 games on steam you will keep them

my friend, i guess i have to tell you my whole life story since you keep making assumptions, i have always played pc and console. People are not forced to play only on one system you know? I was too young to have played ps2 and so on but that is completely irrelevant to any of my points. You don't have to have played every console in gaming history to know mainstream gaming consoles as the playstation 4 and the xbox 1 are crap. Both consoles are underpowered ,even when they came out, sony and microsoft engage in anti consumer practices, their exclusive games are always the same style of game we have seen a thousand times before, no choices, very limited mod support for games, games on pc are cheaper, most games have locked 30 fps and some of those struggle to even keep 30 fps, games on console don't look or run as good as games on pc, i could keep on going forever....
consoles are an inferior experience in almost every level.

1000 are useless if you don't replay them more than once. I couldn't give a toss if my 400 game Steam account was locked.

You have no frame of reference beyond the PS3 and no personal inner knowledge of the other consoles.
