Your internet is not permanently gone, all you have to do is take a subscription to the 1080p video streaming package for a mere $9.99 extra a month and the basic gaming package for only $12.99 a month will do for downloading Steam games and playing titles which require nothing more then a 33.6 kbit/s modem.
what is the bandwidth throttled to?
with most you can still play mmo or other games online while throttled
just downloading maps/updates will take a long time
Comcast (Theres only 2 isp's in america and theyre both ♥♥♥♥♥♥ monopolies)
Idk, but every time i try to use steam or play anything at all, it goes to 0.
Somehow youtube magically runs fine, so does Comcast servers, internet browsing, etc, but NEVER steam
Multiplayer games are near impossible to play. Not using wifi. Im also going through a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ of trouble just trying to upload this post.
For normal web browsing, youtube, netflix, etc, nordvpn is the fastest and best service. https://join.nordvpn.com/
But Nordvpn isn't the greatest for peer-to-peer or torrents (yes there are legal uses for torrenting). If you need peer-to-peer access for torrents, (I do this a lot), then Ipvanish is the best and fastest. I've tried almost all of the vpn services and most of them don't let you connect to peer-to-peer services very well, or throttle you down for the ones that do let you connect. Ipvanish runs full speed (up to 35 Mbps) for peer-to-peer / torrents. https://www.ipvanish.com/
It was a 50% joke, 50% serious response.
You most certainly do -NOT- have to pay an internet company to use a VPN service, I'm not sure where you ever got that from. To the ISP it's just a secure connection. They can't tell the difference in you using a VPN or a https connection to a website. And it's completely impossible for them to know what you access, use, or look at through a vpn connection.
And this totally relates to net neutrality. With internet companies now free to throttle users for anything they wish at any time for any reason without telling us, a vpn service is the only way to get full internet speed for everything. NordVPN allows (at least from what I can tell on my connection) up to 250 Mbps constant for all web-based and streaming services. Netflix, youtube, etc. So if your ISP is throttling youtube or netflix, that would be your best option. NordVPN even offers a free trial for a couple days to see if it does what you need.
Are you using their own Equipment or do you have your own Router and/or Modem? What "level of service" do you have?
I had Time Warner Cable and bought their "Signature Home" package at the time, I usually had issues 4-6 times a month due to having 4 Gamers in my house all using their own Consoles/PCs. I called and complained, they "upped my speeds free of charge!". Only had issues 1-2 times a month. Then Spectrum came in and I needed new equipment... Speeds died.
So I did phone tag and got the run around. Ended up buying my own Router, demanded a tech come out to my house or I was switching providers. Tech came out, I told him to switch their Router/Modem to bridge Mode(he talked a big game about "omg dont its bad!") I then hooked up my own Router. Made sure everything was okay and things worked, sent the Tech home...
Lo and behold, I now get ~400 Mbps Download speeds on hardlined PCs. My hardlined Consoles average ~154 Mbps. I swear Consoles are hardcoded to be limited. Though the PS4s tend to average ~213 Mbps as opposed to Xbone being ~160 Mbps tops. My Upload is still crap though and I need to pay a Service Fee to upgrade it. Good thing I don't want to be a Streamer lol.
EDIT: I think their equipment is just dirt cheap garbage and therein lies the problem. Only throttling I've ever experienced was Cell Carriers/Service. Couldn't watch jackall when I was with Sprint unless I "upgraded to premium stream service!". Verizon has been doing me good for a few years now.
wifi is always slower ..always connect all PC's to a router or comcast gateway via wire
as no they do not guarantee wifi speeds as things like walls or position of your gateway may cause issues with other devices that may interfere with a wifi connection
always go wired for the fastest speeds
there are more than cable 2 isps
comcast, cox, charter, tw
but all are monopolies in their area (no other cable choice)
comcast doesnt throttle, they just charge you for overage (2mo free/yr)
if you are having troubles try changing the dns server setting on yoru router to
1.1.1.1, 8.8.8.8, and 8.8.4.4
and try a tracert to googe.com to see where the slowdown starts
first few hops are router and modem
next are isp then internet backbone
start -> run/search -> cmd
tracert googe.com
Im using the device my ISP gave me. Is there some advantage to buying my own router/modem? Problem is, I dont know much about networking or which companies to buy from
Always wired. I know wifi tends to be unreliable, so I avoid it.
I've been considering using NordVPN If this continues.
