tips for opening eyes underwater?
hello, i like swimming but i have a problem : i don't know how to open my eyes underwater.

i always have to wear a diving mask to go underwater, a useful thing that are obstructing my sight with the breathing smoke/fog that my nose are making at the google part of the mask.

so... any tips?

I just do it; it is slightly uncomfortable the first few times but I got used to it.
I'm not sure about the side effects of keeping your eyes open underwater cuz i'm no scientist. But maybe you can bink time to time to see your surroundings. You don't have to keep your eyes open all of the time.
You just have to do it. There really is nothing you can do to prepare for it.

Otherwise, there are various tips and materials designed to stop mask fogging.

Why use a diving mask instead of swimming goggles?

When I went to Catalina the lifeguard told us to spit in the mask, spread it around, then dunk the mask in the water to prevent it from fogging up.

Not sure if it actually works as I never was able to go snorkeling because I have to wear glasses.
It does work.
wear goggles. problem solved
Spit onto the goggles. Smear it around. It helps with the fogging...oops someone beat me to that.

Just wear some goggles... :steamsalty:
Does anyone else have severely blurred vision when they open their eyes under water?

Actually, the water will magnify your vision a bit. It depends on how bad your eyesight is.

I hope you liked Catalina - one of my favorite places to visit when I lived in the state.

Depends on what kind of water you're diving into. Sea water's gonna sting due to all the salt, and pool water's going to be filled with chlorine or something similar. IIRC you shouldn't open your eyes in either conditions without air pockets (goggles/mask) to protect them. Not sure about the sea thing though, but it's not hard to imagine how sea salt is bad for your eyes.
