What is with the obsession over Japanese culture?
I made a topic similar to this one maybe two or so weeks ago, where I asked if I should be offended when people (clearly) google translate to talk to me, even though I do speak English.

But anyways, this is different. People who send friend requests would randomly just message me about some animes they're watching and start talking about it right off the bat on messaging, which I assume they think I already know about it? Even though.. I have not watched anime in like.. YEARS and I don't want to watch it anymore because I think I grown away from it (but I don't wanna say that to these people because it sounds rude). What do you guys think? and also, do you still watch anime?

Haven’t watched anime in...such a long time, not really my favourite thing in the world.

Weird how people automatically assume that of you though bahaha. I guess people just really hate their culture and prefer Japanese culture...becoming weebs.

Anime was there for them when they got rejected by their crush, when they weren’t the most popular at school, or when they didn’t have anything to do at home.

Then again I could be talking bs, interesting topic though.

As for why people are so fascinated with Japan. Well it's either the anime or they actually like the culture. And some (me included) like Japan because of it's martial arts. I enjoy watching Kendo matches and sometimes like to watch Kyokushin Karate matches as well.

Tldr: Anime/Culture/Environment/Martial Arts
Yes, I am of descent. I can see them thinking that, then. But it needs to be understood that not even the people here obsess over it like people from elsewhere do. And if there are, there's a specific place for it in Tokyo. I guess I live in Osaka, the place where people have more common sense with more boring lives? haha.

Weeaboos are just embarassing. Especially the extreme ones that try to pretend they are from Japan. They need help.

I have never cared for or watched anime, I only watch western cartoons. The only things from Japan I like are Sanrio and the old temples and historic stuff. Oh and the cherry blossoms are pretty in spring.

I watch anime. While I find Japan and Japanese culture interesting and whatnot, I don’t obsess over it. I am not Japanese, I am Swedish and have no problem with that. People who shun their own culture and pretends to be Japanese are pretty disgusting actually.

Obsession? I would call it more like, fascination. Your country is one of the greatest and most respected around the whole world. There is so many things that you're better at than everyone else. You have opinion of hard working people with good manners. Advanced yet spiritual, serious but also goofy. Shinto manifests from all around your country, balance of technological advancements and cultural herritage. Something, most of the western countries have forgotten. I've seen many youngsters fascinated with anime, as it's most popular window to have a peak at your culture, japanese live action movies are not that much popular to learn from them. And I don't even talk about any stories in anime, but also background we can see in them: your cities, food, architecture - all this and much more, is exotic and fascinating to us. Whole world could learn many things from Japan in my opinion, even someting so importantfor a whole country as immigrant laws or healthy lifestyle. Forgive those kids that are writing to you, treating you like anime guru. They are fans of something made in your country, your culture aswell. Treat it more like a compliment, even tho I know it can be annoying sometimes. To all you who read this, think about your country. Does whole world know about your country? What you're famous for? How lifestyle of your folks looks like? I'm polish, some people know us for vodka, getting our asses kicked at both World Wars and many other not-so-nice things. And how many know about Copernicus? Probably not many out there. Atleast most Witcher fans know it's a polish game and book, small gem to be proud of.

Japanese cuisine: Exotic and yummy!

Japanese culture/tradition: Really cool, appealing even to foreigners!

Japanese fitness and philosophy: Martial arts (best in their field of expertise), sages (second only to ancient Greek and Renaissance ones and yet, just barely)!

Japanese history: Rich and long, interesting to study.

Japanese people: Cute and elegant, especially girls! Also, 40 and 50 years old women, have the looks and silhouette of a 20 year old girl!!!

Japanese arts: I came in contact only with manga and animation, but those two are unique and have spread worldwide! People who live there testify, that normal drawing, poem writing, music writing/play and other traditional arts, are also in bloom and always enjoy wide, critical acclaim! If you consider video games to be a form of art, then those also have some very nice representatives here, as well!

Japanese ethos: Code of honor, strict lifestyle, discipline, they study hard and are exemplary social units, as well as structure, as a result.

Japanese education system: Recently nominated the best in the entire world, by comparison. Nuff said.

Japanese religion and spirituality: Peaceful, humble, trully enlightened, in one word. Nothing like terrorists, pe dos, hypocrites, western vandal-atheist-activists and cultists, or satanists and neo-pagans.

All in all, Japan is my ideal place to live. If Europe goes down the drain (which is very soon to be), i am considering to migrate to: a. Russia b. Japan c. Israel

Personally I have absolutely zero interest in visiting or residing in Japan.

Your avatar is an anime furry and you're calling other people "weaboos?" I don't suppose you see the irony there?

You don't watch anime?

Just because someone likes anime or manga that doesn't mean that they are obsessed with Japanese culture.

Never understood the obsession some people have over things like this. Every culture has its pros and cons.

I do admire the Japanese culture; specifically the part where when they do a job, they make sure to do it well. And the part where Japanese people tend to be very respectful towards elders or people with seniority.

He also claimed that he didn't care for or watch anime at all but that was a lie. He obviously does, according to his own posts. Seems kinda hypocritical.

The grass is always greener on the other side. There must be people obsessed over Japan, while also there must be people like me, deeply westernized.
