The Conners

In case you haven't heard... The show "Roseanne" got a reboot recently. Roseanne Barr, the actor, made a questionable joke on Twitter. It was widely regarded as racist. Within hours the show was cancelled, and the episodes were pulled from Hulu.

You'd think that'd be the end of it. Instead, the show is slated to return this fall as, "The Conners".

So how's this going to work? If the rumors are true, the writers will be killing off Roseanne's character. She's officially removed from the show entirely, and unlikely to ever return. So killing the character makes logical sense.

The show Roseanne has always been about social commentary from the perspective of a typical American family. Part of the "new" Roseanne was exploring the divide created in families by modern politics. The show is often about sensitive topics such as gender identity and racism.

I don't think they can make the same show. I think they'll be too afraid. I think they'll hold back. It's understandable they'll want to avoid controversy. I think it will hurt the ratings though.

This is basically a sit-com, spin-off. Which is going to start with the death of the former main character. That's a big hill to climb.
