Yes, but some communities are more prone than others. For example, League is known for having a heavy population of toxic players. I think it really comes down to how well known a game is. More players = more ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ unfortuntely.
OP, try to find a game that has a small community. Smaller communities tend to be more mature (especially if the game is older) so you are less likely to run into toxic players.
I also second Insurgency. I don't have it, but I've heard good things about it. Its hailed as the more mature CS. If you can get over the clunky controls, Arma is another good one. Very mature audience there and many close-knit communities.
Angels Fall First is my go-to game, but its a sci-fi team based shooter with vehicles and starships. If you ever played Battlefield 2142, then you'll be right at home. Very very small community because its still in early access and the developers have stated that they don't want to actively start advertising it yet due to the fact that they don't want tons of players coming in who have no idea what early access is and review bombing the game (as has happened with other games). Often times you'll be playing with the developers of the game and they are very cool about suggestions and bug reports. They also seem to be one of the few developers who allow criticism on their forum, as long as you are mature about it.
There's always that "Salty Peanut" but it never will compare to the toxicity in games like Dota, CS:GO, LoL, WoW, R6S, among other things.
I never played WoW, but I never knew it to be toxic? Was the pvp really that bad?
ARMA 3
Arma series.
Etc.
The degeneracy, perversion and genuine loserism is palpable every time they write an obtuse comment on any forum.
