What qualifies as Anime?
Can non-Japanese animation made in the style of Japanese anime be considered anime? Alot of these "non Japanese anime" are considered cartoons, but are considered anime by other people. If you do consider non-Japanese animation as anime, what makes it anime? Is it "I will know when i see it" ? Or maybe it counts as anime if it follows the same style.

What are your thoughts?

I'd say it a genre and an artstyle.

It's only anime if it comes from Japan, but most people associate it with the art style.

AVATAR THE LAST AIRBENDER IS NOT ANIME, GUYS.

Nobody can deny that this is anime, pure and simple:

Thread by Traror that isn't related to something politics? WOW :O

If it's animated and made in Japan it's anime. There's an anime artstyle and then there's actual anime and manga, both have to be made in Japan to be considered genuine anime or manga.

If Avatar was drawn and animated in Japan but voiced by Americans I'm not sure what they would call it

I'm more than certain Bones animated Space Dandy, but the English dub came out before the Japanese dub. I'd just call it an anime, as the music, sounds, and dub are just part of it, but the actual animation is Japanese.

I don't bring politics in my own threads, usually.

So if it is American, and it clearly has all the same trends anime typically has, it isn't anime unless it's from Japan? Why the restriction?

Personally, i think if it is clearly supposed to be in the anime style it should just be treated as such, after all, it's still basedon the original Japanese anime

Well Japanese people I'm pretty sure just call American cartoons "American anime" since they just call cartoons and comics anime or manga. Anime originated from the word Japanimation. The anime style came from Japan mostly so it seems fair to say it's a Japanese thing.
As far as I know anime in Japan means animation and that's all, thus, cartoons. Nothing else. So everything would be considered anime.
Outside Japan, it means animation from Japan, thus cartoons from Europe or America wouldn't be considered anime.

So everything is anime, but at the same time everything isn't anime. It depends how you look at it. Schrödinger's anime.

Right, but i don't think any of us are talking about the Japanese perspective on it, and there is a clear differnce in art style context etc. in the average anime in comparison to most American cartoons, primarily anime is has uniformity in art style now, in comparison to American cartoons which tend to vary.

That also raises the question, American "anime" clearly in the style of anime etc. but not made in Japan, what do you call it? it's clearly differant than regular cartoons for the same reasons as Japanese anime.

(note, im not really trying to argue my opinion, i really want to know if there is a system everyone can agree to for "American anime" from our Western perspective. Maybe it is it's own subgenre of cartoon? If so, what do we call it?)

Personally, i like the term Amerimanga, and should be applied to anime as a subgenre, so, Americanime?

I know and agree, but this thread is more about the perspective of us Westerners.

For me it is anime if it's from Japan, otherwise it isn't.
LexMulder 2 Feb 2018 @ 6:58pm
Isn't anime literally the word for japanese animation? So everything that's not from japan isn't anime therefore. I mean, they have this special style for most of the anime in japan, so if a cartoon uses a similar style, you could say it's a cartoon in anime style.
