So obviously the moon represents some goal, but what are the stars supposed to represent? You missed your goal, then what?

I don't think they knew the rest of it, it was actually supposed to be "Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss, you'll land amongst the stars, deprived of oxygen and probably dead, which is where you belong."
