Would massive scissors be effective in a sword fight?
It would be slightly slower, but it can be effective. You can slash someone easier, and you can strech it to the very end and use it like a sword. Maybe it would work.

Yes you could litteraly just open up the scissors and then close them on your opponent
look up clock tower's entire series they literally use scissors as weapons.
If yoyu were using scissors, then, it wouldn't be a sword fight.

also scissors are essentially duller sword blades and tinier, so a bigger size, and probably sharper too would be actually pretty useful unless someone pulls out a rock
then you're ♥♥♥♥♥♥

There's actually a major difference in how they're constructed.

Scissors aren't strong enough to survive combat, let alone sharp enough to kill somebody. A sword-sized pair of scissors would probably be too heavy to lift.

There's actually a lot of science in a sword blade. They're made from a very specific type of steel alloy, which is both very light and somewhat flexible. This is to stop it shattering when it hits something. Scissors are made of whatever low-grade steel was available, and would probably break on a hard impact.
what about against a rock?
As long as you're half naked in some ridiculous looking outfit that can talk, yes.

They'd stand about the same chance as a snowball in an erupting volcano :)

Giant scissors would be the ultimate weapon against the Samurai, though, since their armour was often made of laminated paper.

Back to the topic, I think not. It would be slow as hell and inappropriate to a one pronged really sharp fork duel.

I think the core problem is people misunderstanding what a sword is. They're not just a sharp hunk of steel, there's a lot of technology just under the surface.

If you take a steel ingot and hammer it into a sword shape, then sharpen the edges you'll have something that looks a lot like a sword. But which would be too heavy to wield in combat, and would either be too soft to hold and edge or would smash to pieces on impact with anything solid.

To make a real sword, you need to start with a sophisticated steel alloy. The blade needs to be lightweight and well balanced, both for mobility and to preserve your energy. It also needs to be flexible enough to survive heavy impacts, while hard enough to hold an edge well.
stainless steel scissors vs a sharp one way cutting blade that can be used to exert more force than the one holding the scissors ever can.

Hardly a necro, those are usually within 30-90 days between replies where the thread is effectively dead.

The only thing people understand in swords i that they're long and sharp, they don't bother to see handling, weight, striking power or durability.
Scissors lack ALL of those, extending the scissors will cut your hand, hard contact will break it, it lacks in striking power because the whole concept of scissors is cutting with both parts of it, it is too heavy to be swift, and most
of this weight goes towards the handle which you're not gonna be using cause you'll handle it like a sword.
A well built fighter is better off with fists, a newbie is better off with a knife.

Actually it would be useful depending how much they weight and exactly how big the scissors are. It also depends type of sword. Against fast swords like rapier i don't think so.
