Funny you mentioned communism. Communism and Christianity are almost a brother and a sister, they are both based on the same set of moral values and on the desire to control the individual through various fairy tales and promises of utopia, in this life or in the next. The only reason they never got along was because two power-hungry ideologies naturally always clash and fight for dominance.

Except Communism doesn't hold societies together. The empirical evidence speaks for itself - the lifepsans of religions are measured in centuries or millenia. No state or empire lasts longer. I have already made this point and have yet to hear an argument for why any other sort of "powermongering" is superior, particularly in light of the enlightnment - if you'll forgive the pun.

I don't think religion is nearly as simple as people make it out to be - fairy tales and whatnot. If it were so, it would be easy to replicate, a feat that our science based on replicating experiments has yet to do. I think a lot of people just mock it because they beleive it to be popular without ever thinking about what causes it to work.

Religious though I may be, I am not above the secular. There are biological reasons why religion is preferred and why it prospers in the face of everything. Those who say "religion is foolishness" and cannot explain why or how are essentially saying they believe in a power that they do not know the nature of. Who are they to say there is no god? As far as their minds are concerned, they already have several that they obey without knowledge or question. Hunger, thirst, life, entropy. It is not beyond the reach of a god to influence the biological, especially when it's a god of creation.

But I didn't post here with the intent of discussing religious matters, merely empirical evidence. And empirical evidence states that Jesus is one of the most influential figures in history. Subjectively, he was one of the coolest, too, offering redepmtion to everyone through their own desire for salvation.

Maybe He was just a Jewish peasant trained in carpentry. Maybe He was completely human, and maybe it was just a coincidence that He fulfilled a bunch of prophecies, some of which might have been deliberately fudged. Maybe all of them were. The results cannot be denied.

All that said, this is my opinion, backed by what knowledge I have accrued. If you don't like it, you don't like it, you don't have to follow it, but don't waste my time re-hashing the same pathetic attacks on religion that have been going on for over a century. The day somebody makes a succssful society that is atheistic, my very logical self will listen to it. Until then, you're spitting into the wind.

Yes, it is. Is there any point to a multi-sided argument? Did you want me to make my opponent's points for them? I do that often enough. I'm simply saying that the successful religions are successful. That's merely pointing out empirical evidence. If anything, you should attack my deductions.

Before you mention the USSR, please note that they rebelled against a crappy and inept regime (ironically to be replaced by one just as bad), not necessarily against religion.

That's what all socialists and teenagers think they are doing. Rebelling against an inept regime. People are quite disposed to it, evolutionarily speaking. After all, the tribe doesn't grow and expand with a bunch of common genes milling about in one place, does it? Or were you of a mind to have gay sex with your father?

There's an evolutionary selective pressure behind that, driven by competing life-forms and viruses. If we don't keep selecting new mates, making new offspring, they will out-compete us with their superior reproductive rates and eventually all of us could be destroyed by a virus like smallpox. No human needs to know those reasons, they know them instinctively.

Revolutionaries of the annoyingly common sort are utterly absent any type of wisdom or knowledge. The only thing they know is that society should change. It's an easy instinct to prey upon for the aforementioned biological reasons. Forgive me, but I'm going to use you as a proof.

There's also the fact that many people like to have proof of a "higher power", which there currently isn't unless you believe a bunch of old books and texts. There's nothing really wrong with religion or religious people, but I for one just can't believe any of it myself.

You believe in what man couldn't do rather than what a man did? You consider yourself a logical sort of person, why would you even consider Tesla? Would it be equally valid to consider Jules Verne? How about any number of scientists who thought radium was a cure-all?

I'm not going to pressure you any more, but please, think about what sorts of logical conclusions you are making. If you don't have the evidence, and cannot explain yourself, you have nothing.

you keep operating under the assumption that because he could not state what you deem valid reasons for why we exist, then you must be right. religion only works if the other doesn't work. the problem with religion is you can't prove it. science doesn't have to currently prove how everything happened. people are figuring out how the universe came to be and why we are the way we are, instead of some old book.
