American Controllers have Backwards Button Pads
Does anyone have an explanation for this? I can't find any answers. It started out as this:
X
Y
A
B
But on EVERY American controller, it's changed as this:
Y
X
B
A
I really want to know why it's like this when it didn't start out like this in the first place. It really messes with my head, and literally EVERY controller is like this.

I got myself an SN30 Pro controller, which is based on a snes controller. So at least I have the correct button layout it should be. But there are a lot of controllers out there I wish I could try... The backwards button pad just really messes me up

Open the controller up and move the buttons.

We read from left to right then down and left to right. YXBA

Not counter clockwise from the top. That would be dumb in any language.

On an xbox 360 controller you can't move the buttons as they are shaped a certain way to go in a certain spot. Trust me i tried.

Idk if you're getting me, but I prefer Nintendo's button layout.
...And I'm not wasting my time opening and switching around buttons in a controller ._.
Then stick with buying Nintendo-themed peripherals because every other controller is sticking with the golden standard.
"The golden standard." Yeah because that's totally normal. I have no idea what part of the brain thinks "Y needs to be on top" or "X needs to be at the left." I have an SN30 Pro as I mentioned before, and that is like a snes controller. but it has joystics and R2 L2 buttons c: It also has a home button and turbo button

While it doesn't make a lot of sense, it is what it is. The Dreamcast, the XBox, the 360 and XB1 use that standard.
And since controllers are made for maximum compability they stick with that layout.

The layout you're used to is the odd one out since the only devices that use it are Nintendo ones and the only third party controllers that use the Nintendo layout are controllers mimicking the Nintendo controller's designs or are specifically built for Nintendo products.

See that article is kinda wrong. As the sega genesis had a 6 button controller that had abc xyz way before the saturn did.

Dreamcast... All backwards... https://www.amazon.com/Official-Sega-Dreamcast-Controller/dp/B00004TNCX/

:qr:
What does that even have to do with what i said. That article you posted said the xyz did not come out till the saturn. Which is wrong. As the sega genesis had the xyz buttons before the saturn came out.

Look at lower right hand corner of the picture. An official sega genesis 6 button controller.

Steam recognizes my controller as an xbox one... :/ I had another controller with my preferred layout and it didn't recognize it, so I was able to map the buttons to my liking. But since it sees my controller as an xbox one, in every game, I have to manually go into big picture mode and switch the buttons around. And I don't have any options to permanently change the controls. I mean, they stay when i change them for the game, but I have to do that with every new game I get.

Yeah, that is something Valve should address. Just allow people to save their layout permanently would be a good feature.

Would also double for people who use XInput controllers.

Valve's controller is weird. Touchpad? Why? >.< If I wanted to use a touchpad I would use my laptop. ...My mom dropped cheese on it and it's working perfectly fine but after that accident, my K key needs a bit of a harder pressing.
Oh holy crap.

You are asking why X and Y are on the top and not on the bottom, aren't you?

No I was asking why on an american controller, why is X on the left and Y on the top? I'm used to X being on top and Y being on left. Same with A and B. I'm used to A being right and B being on bottom.

That isn't backwards. That is how the letters go. The backwards ones are Nintendo specific. I would wager that Nintendo has a patent on that specific button format.

And that isn't a U.S. only thing. The format is the same around the world. If I go to Australia, Germany, or Taiwan, the y button will be in the exact same place on the same hardware, no matter where it is sold. It's called Universal Design Standard.

I don't like it, it messes with my mind. I have to think for a couple seconds before pressing a button. I would prefer none of the buttons be labelled than to have them be labelled "universal standard"

I hope nintendo adds a new punch out game to switch
