Something like that was the intro of one of the Lethal Weapon movies I think. There was a guy with a flamethrower burning cars and stuff in the streets of NY, while wearing a full body armor. They shot his tank and blew him up.
Long range = dead
The only real use of it is to burn down weed farm
Mind you maybe it wouldnt be a bad idea as it would certainly set the cat among the pigeons having to deal with keeping your weapon clean, not water or sand/dirt logged, gun jam, bullet breach, barrel heat, etc. Having to go into battle with only the ammo you or your squad can carry, not being able to just pick it up like you do in games like its going out of fashion would make online multiplay very interesting but we know that wont happen as it would kill the whole shooter market.
Flamethrowers were used to great effect in the Vietnam War by the Americans, who would use them to not only clear large areas of vegetation, but also burn any Viet Cong hiding in that area. Other popular weapons for that era and place included: napalm strikes to clear even larger areas and kill even more Viet Cong, shotguns, and the good old M16.
Any weapon is useless unless you use it in the environment and situation it was intended for. You wouldn't use a pistol to snipe, so why would you use a flamethrower in a long-range, non vegetated or heavily urbanized area?
In video games, many of them have flamethrowers as killstreaks or powerful weapons. In most Call of Duty and Modern Warfare games, the flamethrower is a near instant kill, and if it doesn't, you'll be seriously, seriously hurt.
In many games, the flamethrower is a decisive weapon within 30-45 feet in most cases. However, pretty much none of them actually represent what a flamethrower is in real life. Then again, real life isn't that fun, huh?
