At this point XP/Vista users will have to suck it up, and move on, just like back in 2007 when 98/ME support has ended.
Aside from that only actual issues I've had with Windows 10 are bug related due to feature updates, but that's a whole other argument.
Half life came out in 1998.
Steam came out in 2003.
Hell, even counter strike, a game that was built from half life, was on like version 1.5 before steam came out and forced everyone to get steam to continue playing.
Maybe you were thinking of half life 2.
Plus Linux users have all the tools they need to play their games, there even SteamPlay for Linux OS's which makes Windows games have much better compatibility to playing them, I hear nothing but good things for old games for the past few weeks.
I've been thinking about to turn it into an arcade cabinet and install some old retro games on it that I still have on CD-rom ... but my main gaming PC is on windows 10 so I don't care if steam stop supporting windows xp.
B. Buy your games DRM free from GoG, or etc, check if they offer free games you can redeem if you own them on other platforums, just like "GoG connect"
gog.com/connect
Simply download game, bring it to old outdated system that using old outdated OS, and install, or copy the game folder onto USB thumb drive, and drag, and drop it on to your old outdated system that using old outdated OS, and run the game .exe, and enjoy.
C. Do what you said, then feel bad about it later if something goes wrong, because you'll have a higher chance of getting a virus, and since Windows XP has loads of security flaws popping up for the last 4 years, the odds of something happening just be downloading is much higher compare to the other OS's that has patch, or taken care of majority of security flaws, and the antivirus can only do so much, if it not able to detect, then it will not do anything if somehow got a virus, which is why people keep pointing at the high risk you're talking when using outdated OS's, and especially downloading from unknown/untrusted sources, which is the risk you take when you're trying to pirate software.
I have been in few dicussions for past few months, haven't found one game as of yet on Steam that's complately unplayble with no way of doing a patch, notepad edits, or anything, and we're upto 26k game games on Steam right now, I'm very interested finding which games on Steam itself, not by disk, that can not be played outside of Windows XP OS, which no one was able to name one game that was unplayble as of yet in any of the discussions I have seen, or been in.
