A site/place for song appearances in media?
I was browsing my Steam music, and apparently there's this song called Iris- Goo Goo Dolls.

It sounds madly familiar even though the name doesn't come to me. It was located in the Fortress Forever directory, which never played that song before. I feel like I heard it in some movie or TV show but the Wikipedia entry for "appearances in media" only has a few of them which none of them I've heard of.

I was wondering if anyone knows if there's some sort of place for such a thing. Kind of a niche thing but hey, what's the harm in asking?

You’ve probably heard it in a gameplay video or on the radio.

Google play music on mobile also has that feature.
Nah, I mean like, for example, movies, TV shows, games, any major-ish piece of media where the song appears in. Kinda like a "This actor played in movies X Y and Z" but for songs.

It sounds pretty niche even on paper but I felt that there's no harm in asking.
You mean like an IMDB for music?

Yeah, basically. Might not have a ton of uses like the actual IMDB would, but it'd be a pretty good place for "where have I heard this song before..." in such moments.

That song sounds similar to Heather Nova's "Walking Higher". If you google "songs that sound alike" you'll mostly get forum posts with people thinking the OP is looking for similar sounding songs because they like a particular song and want find others just like it.

Iris was relased in the late 90's and around that time songs were included in films and tv shows without much thought given to the copyright issue like there is today. 90's tv series like "China Beach" and "Murphy Brown" had a long wait to be released on dvd because of the new copyright laws for music. Those shows featured pop music from the 60's, 70's and 80's and the producers never bothered to get permission from the artists to use them because the thought at the time was that they didn't need to. Which meant they weren't always listed in the end credits. Only the first season of Murphy Brown has made it to dvd and the other seasons are still pending.

You'd probably have to find blog posts dedicated to bands from that era for detailed info on songs and where they were featured.
Interesting, I'll try looking for such things. The TV series you mentioned don't ring a bell for me though.

I was trying to search for an IMDB for songs as well. Unfortunately, I have yet to find one. I wonder how someone might put that together.

Because that's a main stream radio play song for the last 20 years and you've likely heard it multiple times on the radio and that's why it's familiar.

I don't listen to the radio, but since it's so popular it might just leak into media, so I've been wanting, like Gency stated, an IMDB for songs so I could satisfy my curiosity as to where I've heard it.

That's... actually a good question. One idea I have is maybe looking out for when songs become licensed, but honestly I don't know if that's possible or if licenses are always privately disclosed. But then there'd be a problem if some songs are royalty free or such.

But it doesn't sound like such a website exists, unless if IMDB had a song section and I'm just blind.

Bit late to the game here but there’s a site called Tunefind that works pretty well
