so you say having 3 grammatical genders with 4 articles each (and with the gender of each word being rather random (for example its Der Anzug, Die Uniform and das Kleid . all clothing , yet they use all 3 possible genders ( male female and neuter) having to learn when to write a word with a capital first letter is another thing ( especially since verbs and adjectives can be nominalized ( das Schwimmen macht mir spaß) ( normally schwimmen ( to swim) is a verb
then theres hidden articles where a preposition is mixed with an article ( beim Spielen)
and then theres spelling . if s c and h are together its pronounced like the english "sh" however if a word ends with an S and then you add the diminutive ending "chen" to it you have to make a break after the s and not pronounce it like you would normally would pronounce sh or sch ( and theres no real rule for this you have to know the word to recognize it
I learn better and faster on my own
then get genki
i use it aswell , and its great , theres a large number of vocabs ( way more than any german Japanese learning book i tried , those were just for a bare minimum for business people ( and full of dialogues you might have in business)
genki however has lots of vocabs , grammar sections , exercises and is really good , i use it myself
if you just learn it by watching anime you will make a few mistakes , often subtitles arent even 100% correct , or things are only said in a certain context
i dont take classes at all , admitedly i havent made much progress in the last half year because i was busy with school and personal stuff but genki is by far the best japanese learning book i ever had if you are serious about learning japanese , buy it
I tried to learn English through the dubs yeeeears ago lmao
