Learning Japanese through visual novels and games

Has anyone here tried this?
How did it work out for you?
Are there any programs that identify the various characters or do you search them on your own.
I was thinking of trying out VNs for memorizing kanji.

there's software to rip the text from the game and then put it into a bunch of translation software.... but as far as I know, it's unsupported and it's really hard to find now... plus you'd need a subscription to the best dictionary/edict services.

it's not the optimal way to learn. just use duolingo or something (and even that is ehhh, but better than what op's trying)

I mean, yeah, you will recognize few words here and there, but you still won't be able to communicate properly or at all.

The point is using VNs to help me with learning to read kanji.
The rest will come from Tae Kim and self-study.

Well, no harm in trying out, although it'll be a pretty slow process unless you know how to read those symbols. Best of luck.

VNs will help you learn a word or two. But not the entire language.

If you are to learn Japanese, my best advice is to learn it properly. Anime is full of informal terms, so if you want to visit Japan, you need to know how to speak formally there. Also, the Japanese character system is as complex as it gets, making it one of the hardest languages written, especially Kanji.

There's people here that speak English. The only ones that don't know English are the elders. Unless you want to talk to old people here.

its best to use a proper book teaching the language ( i use genki tho im kinda lazy , i know alot of the things that are early on in the book , but idk if skipping like 3 units is a good idea either)

anime can be good for learning a few words but not for actually learning japanese
