Best sandbox game?
I'm looking for a sandbox with exploration, base building and multiplayer as well as decent combat. What would you say is the best right now? Doesn't have to be on steam

As with so many things in life you typically get out exactly what you put in. Basically the more you tell us about what you like. The better we can tailor our recommendations to your tastes. Another good idea is to make your profile public if you are going to solicit recommendations. That way we can see what you have played, and how long you actually played it. Not only will it stop folks from recommending games you have already played, but it will also tell us what games you enjoyed, and what games you didn't enjoy.

Minecraft + mods is no 1. The hard part is always picking which major mod

Better than wolves?
Thaumcraft?
industrialcraft 2 + buildcraft?
ect

Thanks mate. I made my profile public so you can check it now if you want, and I basically like games with building and crafting really, fantasy RPG stuff is cool but I don't mind voxel games like Minecraft.

Thanks carpel, which one would you recommend?

Terraria. It presents a good challenge while managing to stay a chill sandbox.

Exploring is k2w,and with mods it is even better

Depends on what you want. I haven't played any of the newest versions of these.

Better than wolves is hard as nails and EXTREMELY punishing. (Harder than a lot of rogue-lites) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7KOEETM_jgM

Thaumcraft is fun if you like magic and researching https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uES7jOf1zpI

Industrialcraft 2 is fun if you like tech stuff (Theres lots of other large tech mods too such as buildcraft).

The strength of minecraft is theres a mod for nearly everything. And huge modpacks with tons of mods.

Nintendo even dmca'd this mod. But I used to play pixelmon a ton on server where players were the gym leaders. And the map had recreations of game maps.

It was more fun than the actual pokemon games because you could build everything (also cuz multiplayer) and iv breed multi pokemon at multi breed stations. But pixelmon was computer intensive due to all the added models.

Space Engineers is a great game with tons of content, a rather small but amazing playerbase and unlimited building and exploration. If you have the NASA computer required to run it.
Minecraft is a classic
Terraria if you're more into RPGs
The Forest is great, and so is its cousin Subnautica

Stay away from Subnautica if you want decent combat. It has terrible combat. Poorly optimized and riddled with bugs.

The Forest is good, multiplayer and has good combat. You're a survivor of a plane crash on an island with mutants and nearly naked canibals. There's base building, better items to find, exploration and a storyline.

Minecraft is a notable mention. Find a good server that has interesting and fun mods. And it can change

7 Days to Die : Dated graphics but a zombie horde crafting game. While it's not the best for single player I think it'd be a fun game if you had a few friends to do a survival world with.

Terraria: dated graphics but a vast world, lots of base building items to find, nights to survive and merchants to find. Although it has dated graphics this is a fairly fun game to play

There's Don't Starve Together, but that's a survival base buiding game that I couldn't get into. And the combat's nothing special.

Planet Explorer's -Last a played not worth a buy. It was unfinished indie game.

Space engineers and Empyrion if you're into space at all.

Subnautica devs kind of don't even want you to have combat lol. They won't add guns, but won't double down and make giant monsters unkillable via knife. They just made it take forever and give no drops.

Garry's Mod is a good game, but it doesn't really have the decent combat or exploration (unless you use mods of course)

There's also minecraft which by itself is a good game, but can be better using mods. The multiplayer aspect is ok but not sure if you'd like it (I'm not saying that the entire community is bad, but my friends and I have had bad experience with it from time to time. But there are cool people)

And there's Terraria. While it has all of your interests just like minecraft, its in 2d and I'd say its fairly difficult at the start. I never really played multiplayer so I can't say much about it.

Thanks guys, I'm actually playing Terraria right now with a couple other guys and its not actually to bad of a game. You can add me if you would like to play that some time.

In the future I might also commit some time to Conan Exiles and Minecraft Multiplayer.

I've also got my eye on Project Gorgon, that looks like a fairly decent open world MMO but I would call it sandbox from what I have seen. Has anyone got experience with that?

There are other terraria-likes as well

Crea
Junkjack
starbound
planet centauri
Alchemage

None of them are as good as terraria though, some like to claim starbound is better but...ehhh

At the end of the day it's still minecraft.
