Why does my microphone not work on Windows 10?
Windows 10 isn't as bad as people say it is, but for me it's worse.

A few months ago, I upgraded to Windows 10 for the sole purpose of playing Minecraft Windows 10 edition, but not too long after upgrading I discovered that my microphone no longer worked. I could not fix it, and even contacted live support to help me, but they couldn't figure it out.

So I could have played Minecraft Windows 10, but for the price of busting my microphone. This was a nope so I reverted to Windows 8.1, and my microphone worked once again.

It is a built-in microphone, and I have tried plugging microphones into my PC but it doesn't pick them up.

So, can someone please explain why my built-in microphone didn't work on Windows 10 and what I can do to fix it?

Did you delete and re-install any drivers for it? Also, did you make sure the W10 version had your mic set as the default device?

If only I knew what drivers were.

In short, it tells your microphone (and other things) how to run on an operating system. If your microphone stopped working on W10, it may very well need a driver update based on your new OS.

Check to see if the device is enabled.

Go to Control Panel
Click on Sound

Playback devices tab be stuff speakers, headphones and stuff.
Recording tab is where mics will be.

edit: if you see the device, to enable, Click on "set as default"

Are you doing a fresh install of 10? Sounds like 8.1 drivers are still loaded. Google how to update Mic drivers. It's easy bud

What's the motherboard model? If you have a laptop then post the brand and model.

You mean like a detatchable mic? If it goes to a headset, it'll more than likely be bundled with the headset. If it's standalone, you'll probably want to try and find drivers for that specific mic.

Then it'll update with your headset unless otherwise stated.

It does indeed sound(heh) like driver issue. You can either install some kind of driver scanning program like Driver Booster Free and check or manually go to device manager on your computer and check sound drivers.
