Why do people buy remasters?
People have been clammering for an MW2 remaster and I really don't see any point in it aside from maybe making the graphics better (even though MW2 still holds up just fine 9 years later).

Even with the graphical update, would you really still want a remaster after the *****show that was MW Remastered that put microtransactions into a remaster of another game that didn't have them to begin with. Oh, and god forbid Activision bundles the MW2 remaster with the newest Call of Duty just to make a few more bucks.

From my point of view, the only reason a remaster should be made is if it:
A. Adds/enhances something significant to the game (and no, the extended training sequence from MW Remastered is not significant.) The Metroid Prime Trilogy not only remastered the first two Prime games, but enhanced their control which made them playable for once. That's significant enough to warrant a remaster.

B. Was not released worldwide. The first Fire Emblem game never came to the States until the remaster on the 3DS.

So tell me, why do you buy remasters in the first place? Will you be buying MW2 Remaster when that inevitably comes out?

In terms of multiplayer games, to potentially rekindle the amount of people playing it? There’s nothing like saying goodbye to a favourite multiplayer game that essentially only has around 100 people playing nowadays.

I guess that’s why I’m buying Dark Souls 1 remastered. To get that feeling again, I haven’t done co-op in that game in years. It’ll be nice.

I suppose. Then again, MW Remastered has less people playing than the original.

I enjoyed Dark Siders remastered, not because I got it for free, but because I could play a game I used to love, in a new and fleshed look.

These remasters could change graphics, change performance for the better, or they could simply fix/add gameplay changes. One that comes to mind is the original Dark Souls, it's getting a remaster and I am hyped.

Some games are really dated and could benefit from a lot of quality of life stuff. I don't really trust any devs to make a good remaster though.

Yeesh,
My backup reason is it’s a cash grab that they release a remaster while they focus on creating a new IP.

The only time a remaster is okay is if the original game is not available digitally anywhere and it's mostly intact. In most cases a remaster can make a game buggier or change a lot of gameplay features for the worse.

For example, Lionhead's Black and White 2 would be a good candidate for a remaster as it's not available ANYWHERE.

Or Need For Speed: Underground 2.

In Dark Souls' case... because I love Dark Souls :praisesun:

Also the original requires DSfix (not that it's hard to install... just that it gives me a reason to buy more stuff from a game franchise I love :fhappy: )

Because its new and most likely better with no bugs and better graphics.

Remastering a game or making it backwards compatible is a good way of repopulation in a games community.
Bioshock Remaster wasn’t that at all. Potato level graphics after an update.

I got it for free even then I felt ripped off. I just stuck with the originals.

I've only ever play MW1-3's single-player or sometimes splitscreen and am never giving up the fat PS3 I have it on, so I won't have a reason to buy it if it is remastered, but here are a few reasons people like remasters in general (note that not all of these may apply to MW2):

-Graphics/FPS boosts. Not enough of a reason to buy a new version of the game IHMO, but I don't speak for everyone and that could be the reason they get it. Also, while I wouldn't re-buy a game due to that alone, it can be the metaphorical straw that gets me to buy it.

-Compatibility. On PC, THEORETICALLY, all software made for Windows 95 or above should work on modern PC's, but we all know that is rarely the case. Games even made in the late 00's still may have problems, and the only way for a devs to fix them is to do a complete do-over. That can be a lot of work and the company would want to be compensated, so they re-sell the game. This is even worse on consoles where the PS4 is incapable of.playing PS3 games, and while the X1 is making a good attempt at backwards compatibility, many 360 games (including the MW series) are still not compatible.

-Multiplayer. Often in series like COD, the creators make a new game every year and when the new one comes out, they start neglecting the previous version. This can have several effects ranging from hackers running rampant to the servers shutting down (anyone remember Gamespy or GFWL?) One way to solve this is by wiping the slate clean and remastering the game.

-Missed content. As with graphics, this alone wouldn't make me buy a remaster, but I don't speak for everyone, and it may be compounded with other reasons to get me to replace my old copy of a game with a remaster. With a few exceptions *cough* MW1 remastered *cough*, remasters tend to come with all the DLC for the game that you may not have bought, and possibly even some extra content.

MWR was so bad, the MP is full of sniping lil whippersnappers.

For some people, the remaster is their first experience with the game, and they want what they believe to be the superior version of the game.

Here's a good reason as to why: Some people may, for example, liked playing Sly Cooper as a kid but now realize the graphics suck and want to play it in HD so they buy a remaster for the PS4. On the other hand someone who totally missed out on an original game who doesnt want to play an old low rez version may opt for a remaster.
