Ant Graveyard in the Kitchen...
Hey guys, got an odd problem and wondered if anyone knew whats going on...

Background - Am an adult male in my 30's with a girlfriend. We share a small one bedroom apartment in a large complex. We are not clean freaks, but we are not messy, and have not had any major issues with ants in the past. We do know the apartment complex has ants, as we have occasionally seen them, but its never been an issue or infestation type of thing... BG End

That all changed about a month ago...

We started to find dead ants in our kitchen, on the floor. At first we thought that there was something attracting them, and that perhaps all the chemical cleaners we had spared around the areas in the walls that we know they come from were killing them off as the scoured the floor. We decided to clean the floor well (despite it not seeming dirty) so that we knew the pheromone tracks were gone and sanitize the areas the come from. This is what we would normally do.

Next day the kitchen floor was covered in more dead ants...

Every day, more dead ants...

Then we started to notice it, the living ones... They were focused, they were...working... I saw that one was heading back towards the wall, so I watched. I watched for almost 20 minutes while this little ant walked back over to the small gap, snuck back into the wall, and shortly emerged with a DEAD and in his mouth...

He carried the dead ant a bit across the tiles and dropped him, then turned to go back!!!

I KID YOU NOT!!!

We have also noticed the same thing happening on the tiles in our bathroom. They are using the tile surfaces in our bottom story apartment as fricken graveyards!!

WTF?!?!

Anyone know how or why or what to do?...

My leading theory is that the apartment must have poisoned the walls and since we are on the bottom floor the ants are just using us as a disposal area, I know ants in the wild remove the dead from the colony... But what am I supposed to do about it?

(And to be clear, there have been no signs of the ants doing ant things, they are not stealing crumbs, on the counters, or in any food. It seems there are only a limited number of live ones doing the labor to remove dead bodies...)

Your apartment is built on an ancient insect burial ground. The land itself is tainted, cursed. Frankly, I’m astounded you’ve managed to survive as long as you have already.

Soon they will raise the dead into unholy shock troops, storming through the apartment to combat the human encroachers. It’s in your best interest to build and fortify your domicile, stockpile food and ammunition while you can. Your own private apocalypse encroaches, do what you can to prepare.

Good luck, and death to ants
Find out where coming and from and caulk the opening that way they can't get in. If that don't work then call an exterminator. If you are renting have the exterminator bill the landlord/manager.

This thread was worth reading.

The easy solution is to pay a professional to come out there and deal with it mono a mono. I bet what happened is that someone tried to poison the ants but didn't finish the job. If you'd like you could look up how ants dispose of their dead. I'm sure there are interesting explanation videos out there on youtube or old Nature Channel episodes.

Before you use poison I suggest cleaning the ground with soap and water and normal floor cleaning chemicals. Ants use chemical signals so this would have some sort of impact, as well as to clean the floor of tiny tetris corpses.

An update.

Swept about 60 or so carcases (some in pieces) and about 8 living worker ants up tonight.

We will see how many have returned tomorrow...
