Why is rap so vulgar?
I don't like rap for a variety of reasons (lack of musical progression, instrumentation, harmony, etc.), but that's personal opinion.

What is absolutely not debatable is how vulgar rap can often be. It's not even a novelty, it's part and parcel of the genre.

Why do you think rap as a genre relies so heavily on vulgar themes?

I've got quite a few reasonable answers above without someone getting all butthurt. This conversation is best without you, please go.
Then at least acknowledge them.
If you think logical conversation is a person being butthurt then I don't know what to say to you. Telling someone off for trying to explain something to you isn't going to help

You're making an awful lot of assumptions that I don't feel the desire nor the obligation to address. You said "you're suggesting without these elements music cannot be good".

This despite the fact that I had previously said:

I'm sure there's rap music that's reasonably good somewhere, but that's not what fans of the genre seem to appreciate.

And

As is progression. Music should move, not just go around in circles.

Which was later extrapolated to:

You can have a chord/note progression pass through octaves and even through different instruments. You don't have to repeat the same damn loop endlessly.

Hell, I listen to Gregorian Chants, I can take voice-only if there's a musical element to it. I don't find that in rap. There's no hook to draw me in, it's like putting a drum machine on repeat or listening to the clothes washer thump.
Hey, and that's fine. You don't like the sound of rap, which is valid enough to not like it. It just seems to me that you're making baseless opinions about rap when you haven't listened to enough of it.

Which.....

....was the entire freaking point of this thread. Notice the title is a question, not a statement.

I'm looking at your replies. It looked like you were saying that it seemed like rap was all about sex and vulgar language, yet you admit that you haven't listened to much rap. Forgive me if I'm wrong though.

I will re-word the question at issue for the third time.

Why is SUCH A LARGE % of rap music so vulgar as compared to other genre of music?

I'm not saying all rap is vulgar, but I am absolutely saying that the rap genre is far more proliferated with vulgarity than other types of music.

The question was why. Why do people demand such vulgarity from rap but no other genre?

Not all rap. You’re only referring to what’s mainstream now and a large part of what was mainstream then. Run DMC, Common, WuTang, Fugees, etc were about more than what you’re talking about. You’re probably as old as I am; venture out more.

Re: Harsh language in rap, it’s a representation of their environment. Not all rappers use(d) harsh language or expletives to get that out but it makes sense a majority have and will continue to.

Coffinmaw původně napsal:
The reason so many rap songs tend to be entrenched in vulgarity is probably due to the culture that surrounds the artists that write them. Many of the most prevalent rappers came from low-income and high crime areas in which vulgarity is commonplace even amongst kids. Due to this, vulgarity is used as a means of expression by a lot of these rappers.

Yup, and these were late posts. It took a while to get there.

No munitions were spent. I think the dog got excited, though.

Not gonna lie, I hate rap music. I never really understood why it was so popular, or how most of these autotuned artists made it big. Give yourself some face tattoos, a ridiculous stage name like Lil' Big Mac, and mumble rap your way to success and glory.

I will say however that I think some older rap artists like Tupac and Eminem are alright. The newer guys like Post Malone I see absolutely no appeal in whatsoever, I feel like I'm missing something. Not everyone has the same tastes though.

You kinda did though.

Broaden your horizons when it comes to rap. Skip the mainstream "Lil this Lil that" rap.

I have no point of interest to enter. I have seen nothing appealing of the genre.

It's what the artists want to make, it's what their audience wants, and it's what record labels want to support.

It should go without saying that rap is not inherently vulgar, it's just what the market wants so it's what the market gets.

There are rappers who don't rely on vulgar content to move records, but you just have to look for them.
Because it is HATE MONGERING PREACHING that blunt enough and im a white dude so i dont like it because i dont like to here someone talk about how their gonna murder me it just ticks me off
