It's actually referred to as the "god game genre." I think you would have better luck looking for games "like Populous."

I haven't played it myself but I have been watching quite a few YouTube videos about the game to see if it would be something that I would like. I myself have been looking for something like Black & White 2. Universim reminds me a LOT of B&W from what I have seen so far. I am not quite sure of all the mechanics yet such as good Vs evil as a good and you don't have a creature familiar (that I know of) but you basicly start off in the stone age with two people and you have to grow your population, research new tech to help improve your settlements and well being. But the people basicly think for themselves, decide where they want to build their houses and what not. They will ask things of their 'god' and it looks like they can build some buildings without your input which is cool. I would say maybe look up some game play on YouTube to take a gander at it but I am thinking of checking it out further to fill my B&W hunger. :)
