I don't like them, mostly they are all just full of oversexualised girls and are pretty cringey.
Are games good?
Completely subjective.

I think most are meh.

some Japanese visual novels are good and don't succumb to the usual anime/JAPAN tropes of "everyone is a sexy high school girl, in a high school (except this high school is special)"

I've always been a fan of Steins;Gate for example

there are a few good Western VNs out there too. you know, the ones that actually hired an artist and aren't just trying to ape Japan at being peak animu

Depends on the visual novel.

You may as well be asking "Are SHMUPs good?", "Are RPGs good?", or "How about FPSes?"

Any game genre is good to those who like said genre.

The genre is good. Just not all games in said genre.

:qr:
It's a genre. So you've got everything from atrocious clutter to masterpieces in it.

Yes, that as well.

I dislike a lot of FPS games, but I don't dislike the genre entirely.

Depends on how you define good and what you want from them. The mentioned "If my heart had wings" seems like a decent entry, but it's best to ask for details on its community hub. "Stein's;Gate" is pretty good, but it has a bit of an unusual choice-making mechanic, so it's not the ideal one to start with. "Eden" is also a pretty decent read, but that's a kinetic (no branching paths) one. The developer "Hanako games" makes pretty good otome VNs. It's best to look at the reviews and visit specific community hubs for questions.
One of them ended in a group orgy. They can be a mixed bag of WTF!?
If you like that kind of game then they are fine. They are actually just interactive manga.

Speaking of which go get the free game Doki Doki literature Club. Someone else needs to experience that and I volunteer op
There are good and bad things to a lot of things.
