Just because some lucky dope manage to buy the rights for merchandising and put the damn movie poster everywhere doesn't mean the movie is not good.
It is a very fine piece of work.
The original (Shame Of A Nation) or the öoosely based 'remake' in 1983 "The World Is Yours"?

couldn't refuse myself :P
Tommy Vercetti: No. I just wanted to piss you off one last time before I suddenly appear at the top of the stairs without you knowing.
I would say it deserves the acclaim. It aged better than any film I can think of.
I think it's good. I adore Pacino and cannot fault anything that he brings. Some of the characters I think seem exaggerated (possibly actors trying to match Pacino's presence on screen) which is unnecessary and detracting, but otherwise, I really like the movie and it produced some of the most iconic cinema scenes (The chainsaw, Tony's negotiations, decline at the restaurant, the ending (as referenced byL1qu1dator above) etc.
And how could I forget - great music! I wasn't rushing to the Yeyo till a few years later but hey, still works for me!
I can't comment with regards to how the general concensus stands on it, so can't say if it's generally overrated or underrated etc. but it is acclaimed, was successful, and I think deservedly so.
Most rappers think Scarface glorifies drugs and money while it is actually a commentary on America, capitalism, and drugs.
Even 'a bronx tale' is a better mafia movie.
Goodfellas too.
