Contrary to popular belief, humans don't just roll over and die because it'd be convenient for other people, say, the ones "owning" water sources.
Most people in the world would go into panic "due to their educational/intelligens level" if modern society stopped. But I guess it would solve the overpopulation problem.
Overpopulation isn't a problem. We have the resources, the problem is distribution. For instance: there's enough food for everyone in the world to eat two full meals a day. However, almost half of that food is thrown away as waste.
I've spent almost two months in the wilds on more than one occasion. If you were fighting for food then you didn't know how to find food. Obviously this will vary with region, but with very few exceptions, most locations you can scrummage something up.
Even if that something is ants and grubs.
Some people like thought exercises simply because it's an excuse to role play conditions that will likely never be encountered.
Some of us actually enjoy pressing our grey matter.
I enjoy thought process that're plausible. As much as kids joke about it, look at Africa. They've had food issues for a long time and society there is still going, somehow. With how much the modern world wastes food, this would be a good thing for society. As I said: there's way too many of these "what if's" out there - they all end the same way - it will never happen or it will and no one will be ready for it.
9 missed meals? How many meals you think got missed in Venezuela in the last few years? And it still has the same system.
Hahahahahahahahahahahahahaha......
You think overpopulation is only about food? Most research point to 2billion people being the absolute maximum to keep a balance of ressources (we have ressources that will deplete no matter what as well, with the current usage stuff like oil are gone in 2050 ie.)
I reckon the world population would be best around 0.5-1 billion people. That is if we want a proper balance and a healthy planet.
To list a few of the problems in a easier way.
Exhaustion of natural resources
Environmental degradation
All in all.. economic, environmental and social terms are at risk.
But well.. don't worry.. we will die soon enough anyway.. Because sickness and death awaits us all in the end, no matter the reason
Considering the position of the Doomsday Clock, I would never say never.
Now, I'm not a paranoid schizophrenic anarchist who expects to be nuked to oblivion any day now, but the possibility for a nuclear exchange does exist.
Everyday life is often mundane. It's nice to just explore other possibilities, regardless of how remote.
Alright, so how about what the late, great, Stephen Hawking once said?
To him, society will end due to greed and stupidity.
The problems you list are methodical problems, not problems of overpopulation.
The resources we are closest to running out of are things like Hydrogen, Helium, Phosphorus...there are real shortages there. And while our modern technology relies in part on these, there are alternative technologies.
Food, water, wood...the essentials, are abundant. They're just not equally distributed.
I can see society collapsing due to inequality and stupidity, sure. It won't lead to extinction but I can certainly see the political reality.
