Disconnect the power cable from the back of your PC. Then you connect the wrist strap. and then you do not reapply power to the PC in any way shape or form, until you are no longer fooling around inside of it.
No power should go to a device you're working on.
This is an incredibly basic part of working on a PC. Don't work on your PC if you can't get the simple stuff down. You are going to fry something.
Sorry if I'm like annoying you or anything if that's not right. I can have some trouble getting certain things.
This seems super excessive if you're only installing memory. Just unplug the dang thing, strap on the anti-static strap, pop in the memory and plug her back in. Good to go.
Hell, I don't even use an anti-static strap and never had any issues (but that's not professional advice and all), I have a friend who is super anal about those things.
I know this is a silly question but, which end do you unplug or does it not matter?
Even the wrist band is way over the top for such a small operation.
Stuff these days is alot more usable than older stuff that was easily damaged by static. As long as you do not do anything overly ridiculous or chuck gear at the floor it will be fine.
All he needs to do is turn it all off, remove and replace with new parts.
It's just that the things that I saw on other websites said to use an anti-static wrist strap and the smallest amount of ESD can destroy the parts in a few months.
