I always favored butterfly knives. Although those are not really butterfly knives, they are balisong.
I actually just saw an advertisement for practice karambit knives. I might actually get one. I can use the balisong just fine, so it would be neat to learn another knife skill.
Karambit with a full tang would be more durable, draw faster and even works in conjunction with the martial art of Silat if i'm not mistaken. They are also more easily concealed.
Butterfly knives are theatrical. They remind me of a particular scene in the punisher where Thomas Jane makes a scene of twirling the knife before breaking a thug's nose. The only time I can remember it being useful to me when I carried it in high school was to impress the girls i was dating. Their real strength, and your purpose for using one is to make either an impressive or threatening spectacle.
Not sure if you're trying to impress a girl but if you can properly flip and twirl your butterfly knife and hurl it into a tree a few yards away I can personally assure you this works.
If you are seriously considering training to carry a knife be sure to check your local laws and regulations as both of these are restricted in certain states - after checking your local laws and regulation buy a GUN and concealed carry like a normal law abiding citizen you goofball.

Also, cutting someone affects the user as well as the recipient. it's not an easy thing to do to make people gush blood by your own hand. the best tool for self-defense is simply giving them what they want. the only time you ever fight back is when you're pretty sure they intend harm.
I carry a leatherman, a 3 inch gravity knife, and sometimes either a small Swiss army knife or one of those tiny utility blades for opening boxes. They are not for personal defense. I found a need for them as tools all the time.
it absolutely doesn't matter if their foam, you will feel badass
Clearly these criminals didn't get the memo.
