I thought the nonsense was part of the appeal.
it is
I'm rather split when it comes to him. I don't really enjoy any of his games but I believe he is in the top 10 people who made gaming what it is today.

But that's just me. :P

This is literally what I've been telling someone just recently when we were talking about Death Stranding and he mentioned that he still has no clue what that plot's supposed to be.

I told him that it's going to be the typical Kojima plot again where he simply throws everything which he's been picking up somewhere into a completely abstruse Japano potpourri that makes no real sense whatsoever.

I mean, from a technical and gameplay point of view the games are okay, but when it comes to his stories, I don't dig it.

I played Metal Gear Solid 2 excessively back in the day and it started out fairly good. I really liked it in the beginning. And in the last half it just became more and more abstruse. At around the end of the game I was already annoyed of all the retconning you mentioned and looking forward to wrap it up.... and then came the 20 minute outro where he dropped another thousand things into the mix, seemingly coming from everywhere. Stuff he probably picked up somewhere, thought it was cool and then patchworked together no matter how. There was everything from Illuminati-references to a dozen different philosophical or sociological topics... I could've stomached some of it, but the sheer mass of stuff that he tried to pack into this ending was way too much. He probably thinks, the more he does it, the deeper it automatically gets.

But it's not working like that. To me it was just a super farfetched accumulation of abstrusities.

Sometimes less is more.

When I saw gameplay from the last MGS and that burning whale flying in the sky... yeah.
That was when I lost all interest in that game.

I also can't stand all that cartoony stuff. On the one hand, his games have realistic graphics and art style and try to be serious, on the other hand you have stuff like e.g. these balloons you attach to unconscious enemies and then they shoot into the sky like in Looney Tunes.

But I guess this is a typical japanese thing. I'm not a big manga/anime fan anymore either. I watched a bunch back when I was younger and a lot of them suffered from the same things. A lot of people seem to like it and that's totally okay. Tastes are different. But it's not for me.
that's fair
the new trailer pretty much explained it. it's a wee bit like undertale. something about uniting a broken world through connections infused with your usual absurd weird kojima ♥♥♥♥

His games try to seem like they're telling this grand lore that all somehow connects, but it seems as if he's been making it up on the fly the entire time.
No.

You look at the series he’s made and you tell me that it seems well thought out. The series has so many details that are constantly retconned or have some random explanation out of nowhere. I love the Metal Gear series (mostly for gameplay and aesthetics, but it’s story is decent to me) but Kojima is so full of himself with his “I’m a misunderstood artist” ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ (to the point he want as far as to literally proclaim himself as God in Peace Walker) that it really shows. He presents himself as this genius to people when in reality it feels like he just remembers a concept from a past game, says “oh ♥♥♥♥ how do we include it this time”, and chooses to either explain how it’s relevant or come up with some small bit of lore that completely retcons it

I was very happy learn today that you are wrong

Kojima is just David Cage, but Japanese. Which makes it okay.
Well people like the Metal Gear games but then I hear they were good games for things like gameplay too.

His next one looks like some artsy nonsense, so unless when the reviews come it turns out that the game isn't as a passive a movie, I don't know why should I even care.

the author of a work is literally it's god. that's where the phrase "word of god" comes from, and why it's important for the author to stand apart from his work. otherwise, god can just keep changing the details to match his argument

also, the background is surprisingly well thought out. I think you just don't know enough to appreciate it.

perhaps if you could mention the specific retcons which bother you?
Kojima was off-beat with a few things on MGS 4/5. Claiming we would "feel ashamed of our words and deeds" for criticizing the necessity behinds Quiet's outfit was cringy at best.
Getting rid of David Hayter for a Hollywood actor was also questionable, especially when the japanese voice actor remained the same.

...and claiming that half-baked ending on MGS5 was intentional was also an embarrassment (granted it's true and not due to Konami giving him the boot).

I feel like he's lost touch. His attempt to go full Hollywood is questionable at best.

...and Death Stranding looks like MGS turned UPS simulator. I hope the story is worth it.
He is just a man of art.

I don’t remember too many of them, since it’s been forever since I’ve actually played MGS4 (which is the source of my retcon hatred) but there’s a few in that game that really pushed me off the edge.
1. Big Boss is somehow still alive despite him being killed a really long time ago. Instead, what we saw in a coma was just Solidus(?) and it was actually Big Boss’ body double that died, which he then made a full game about (MGSV). Maybe there were just subtle hints before this (in some weird Kojima magic ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥) that I never noticed but that feels like he just made up an excuse to keep him alive so he could have a satisfying ending to 4.

2. I feel like the entire point of MGS2 was completely retconned by having Raiden come back. If I recall correctly MGS2 was supposed to be a VR training simulation (the S3 program) to test if the Patriots could actually recreate another legendary soldier like Solid Snake by placing them into similar situations. There was this surreal sense of drama and tenseness as you find out the Colonel and Rosemary are just literal figments of his imagination being put together by GW. I don’t know if this is more of just a disappointment rather than a retcon.

3. How is Metal Gear Rex still functioning in 2014? I thought it was completely destroyed?
Better a pretentious director/developer who still managed to create original and interesting concepts/stories than one who just creates yet another run of the mill FPS game. Even if what we see of Death Stranding makes no sense, you must admit that it seems quite an intriguing and original concept.

I like how it’s looking so far, but I still have this bad feeling it’s going to be a failed art project.

Anyone else agree? His games try to seem like they're telling this grand lore that all somehow connects, but it seems as if he's been making it up on the fly the entire time. He also seems to have an excessive amount of pride with constantly reminding us that he's made games in the past through small references. His storytelling is a complete ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ with things being retconned left and right and sudden nonsensical explanations coming out of nowhere (MGS4 is a good example of both of those things crammed into a giant package, like Revealing that all the patriots are somehow the comedic characters from past games? And somehow he gets away with that.

Like ♥♥♥♥ me, man, is it really just me or is he the gaming equivalent of a snobby modern hipster artist? I hear everyone praising him like he's the second coming of ♥♥♥♥ing christ

yup its just you..i consider him the tarantino of video games
