dreamcast not reading disk?

is it common issue? I can turn it on and navigate menu but put disc in drive and it spins only. does dc take an hour to load games or something

Clean the lens or it could be a bad lens or laser.

Some dreamcast games were printed on ♥♥♥♥♥♥ discs so it could be that.

Clean the laser and if that dosen't fix it then buy a replacement laser.

What game are you playing? I noticed Shenmue was pretty crappy at running for it's first disk at the start of the game. I tried on two different disk 1's and had the same issue's at the same parts. And when I turned the Dreamcast on it did not want to read it for like a hour or so then it would let me try again.

we only have 2 games both are pretty scratchy virtua tennis and a shooter. Ive never played our dreamcast so i have mo idea how this ancient beast even is supposed to run

You can also try to buff the discs.

my Dreamcast does the same thing. Its a common issue I think. Make sure the discs are 100% clean by wiping them gentle with microfiber cloth

just checked r6 it looks pretty new actually. dreamcast on rn with r6 in cd drive but its saying please insert game disc

is it a legit copy of the game? believe it or not Dreamcast can actually play hacked games without chips or modding so if you bought the game second hand check its a real copy since the hacked copies might have more issues being recognised over real copies.

But I can remember my fairly clean official games refusing to load and usually taking me to the music player on some occasions. I just kept restarting until it picked it up hence why I think its a common issue with the laser and since Dreamcast is an old console I can't see the laser keeping up well. I have never used a brand new Dreamcast since its before I started gaming so can't say if its an issue with second hand consoles and the Dreamcast just having a dodgy laser that breaks easily or if its always been an issue with even a brand new console.

One of the issues my dreamcast had was the lid not closing properly, causing the disc to be stuck in an infinite loading loop.

Try booting the console while there's a disc in but with a heavy book or some miscelaneous weight pressing down on the lid.
