I've been personally playing (casually) Pokemon Go since release for free.
The reason for that, in case you were wondering, is generation of "income" for developers.
They'll gate content, or create their own expansions, that wil require some shelling out.
That's common on every other platform, where F2P developers use micro-transactions.
To your original question, there are many, and my personal favourite was Temple Run.
Ended up buying the PC version as well.
SEGA also has several of their gems available for free (with the occasional ad).
They also have the original Crazy Taxi but unfortunately it's missing the original awful The Offspring soundtrack which gave the game some charm.
