I think movies like Saw are worthless and lack creativity.
Horro videogames, yeah no thanks. I dont enjoy playing those, unless its either rpg'ish or you're taking a role of very powerful character.
What would be more interesting is the type of horror people like and why as opposed to another type.
I think hostel is worse. This fascination to get people to imagine what if this was you is pretty lame. I prefer stories like sixth sense or the others.
I think the Lovecraft universe is pretty cool, though I've only really looked up the monsters, elder gods and played games like Quake rather than actually read the novels.
Probably the closest I will get to straight up horror is SCP, I used to kind of make fun of it due to the countless terrible SCP's and creepy pastas that exist. However, SCP does shine from time to time, and the whole "scientific journal" formula makes some SCP's fun to read.
I really like psychological horror and "strange" horror. I'm also fine with gore if it serves a purpose.
For things that actually scare me though, it's gotta be the type of horror that is subtle and builds suspense. The type of horror that makes me deeply uncomfortable. Jumpscares are cheap.
So you got the Walking Dead, Sabrina, Bates Motel, American Horror Story, Supernatural, Stranger Things and so on...I'm sure some one has to be watching it.
BUT...in Duck Dynasty, the network didn't care for them praying at the end of each show during dinner.
BUT...you watch Sabrina and all they do each episode is say Hail ♥♥♥♥♥? more than you really need to hear it.
It's cool, I like horror Hail ♥♥♥♥♥!
It was more effective at making people squirm or be shocked at the circumstances these people were in.
It was amusing seeing the different ways they would kill people off, though it did start to get old after the third movie, I admit.
(Sometimes I think the most horrific thing about the first film was just how filthy that bathroom was!)
I liked sixth sense and the others because all the while i had no idea who the ghosts actually were. Not once did i realise until the veneer was broken that the shoe was on the other foot and thats what really made those two films.
Of course there not my outright favourites as im more into thrillers like say oldboy (original version), Irréversible and stuff that have twisted stories and high levels of creativity.
Your right, gore must serve a purpose but todays horrors are just so gratuitous to the point of being cheap and ridiculous.
