He was the one that played levels a thousand times until you got it right. Carmack was the tech, he didn't worry about gameplay. That's why no one liked Doom 3, it was trying to be advanced graphics over gameplay.

Also, when people say Quake is better than Unreal, it's a choice. Ironically SO MANY games use Unreal Tech.
