Why do (almost) all horror movies suck?
There's like 10 good horror movies that I can watch over and over again, but other than that it's just an over surplus of ♥♥♥♥. It pisses me off because it's one of my favorite genres...

A horror movie mostly all viewers say is good is a rare thing dew in part to everyones fears being different.
I see. but have I belittled your actual opinions on the film?

My opinion is people that think Halloween is a horror movie are just did wrong and I think they're silly for thinking so.

I have said I think the movie is really good. I said it's a really good scary slasher flick. and I have stated that it doesn't meet the requirements of horror.

I haven't told anybody they shouldn't watch the movie. I haven't told anyone they're silly for liking the movie. I like the movie. and I know that all the slasher movie tropes actually came from Halloween 1 and 2.

My opinion on people that think it is a horror movie is just that. My opinion. I like my horror to scare the crap out of me, which by the very definition it should.

So you keep calling me condescending because my opinion so if people who don't agree that Halloween isn't a horror movie are stupid is your whole problem?

I think people that don't find Baron von Munchausen a brilliant film are all so stupid. But that's just me.

but I did hear was define what horror was and examples of good films that represent it as opposed to good films that don't.

I don't necessarily think rewatchability equates to a movie being good or bad. I saw Hereditary a couple months ago and I thought it was great, but it's not something I could watch over and over again.

I get your opinion of the film and horror and I have no problem with you having it, but we've already been over that. This could go in circles from here, so to try and avoid that I'll throw in my two cents and you can take it as you want.

I think insulting the intelligence of someone over something as simple as the genre of a film, or really anything involving media, is immature at best and douchebaggy at worst. It completely taints any further discussion on the subject because you've already insulted anyone that may want to argue the point with you. It only manages to annoy people or make them dislike you from the get-go. Overall, I don't really dislike you, I don't know you well enough to dislike you, but I hate that attitude regardless of who has it. If it weren't for that, we might have even been able to have a discussion about what makes horror and how Halloween maybe doesn't fall into that, but it's hard to do when you immediately put a bad taste in someones mouth.

I don't particularly want to argue further because I see people posting in the thread between our posts and I feel we're derailing, I just want you to know where I'm coming from.
The 90's actually really sucked for horror. Countless movies had to be cut to the point of having nonsensical plots, heavily censored gore, just to get it in the theater. You don't see that quite as much now.
It was the "Just say No" "Don't do Drugs" era, afterall.

Now it's all self censorship - "is this mainstream enough?"

Not merely limited to horror genre. All genres generally really suck because even if all the pieces come together (script, direction, actors, etc.) the main problem is that there are always money considerations be it budget and getting along with production hacksaw editors or box office yield.

Indie films typically seem better for horror than mainstream nowadays but you'll need to dig through countless stinkers to find the few odd gems.

I like creepers that instill an unabating sense of dread. The 1980 film The Changeling is a good example. I think that is why so many "serious" horror movies employ zombies or zombie-like plagues because they are monsters that are relentless and eventually all will fall.

Something frequently lumped into the horror genre are thrillers. I think by now horror fans understand the heart of darkness residing inside everyone and don't need a 2 hour recap. I don't consider psychological thrillers -and even classics like Psycho so "horrible" but rather as anxious What Ifs for when people go nuts. I'm not knocking Psycho or Hitchcock -they are Thriller essentials. But not horror.

Slashers, goofy urban legends, teen ensembles, film pop/rock/rap background soundtracks, and many found footage films are rubbish. They are boring and most of those waste your time.

My favourite horror movies tend to have some creature or fantastic element that defies all normal conventions conveying absolute madness for all characters. How they are not coping with the big bad is good. Instead of jump scares I prefer seeing more whoopsidaisy butter fingers in protagonists that mean well but accidentally trip on their shoelaces and decapitate their fellow runners on their way to whatever seeming safehaven.

Something artists understand is that the empty spaces are as important on a painted canvas as the subjects. Unfortunately filmmakers frequently tend to overdue incidental background music to convey dread. King's/Darabont's The Mist ending stands out. The poignant sorrowful wailing Hindi singer was not necessary.
having a plot helps.
Maybe some people are just desensitized to the horrors of reality.
Untrue there are plenty of good horror movies. You just have to find them.

Example:

Goodnight Mommy.

CGI. Practical special effects are way better.
Man I must have been really annoyed last year.

Can we get a horror movie where the characters are actually competent? I hate it when a stupid character gets everyone killed for example lighting up a torch in a firework factory at night.
