Fine.
Horror movies generally don't work because of the fact that they don't actually do horror. They do killer then jump scares and piss off.
There are great horror films. They work because they don't show you the thing you're supposed to be afraid of. They imply it and they drag it out.
Do people say Halloween is a great horror movie. They are liars and incredibly stupid. It does get close. Michael Myers is a force of nature as opposed to your usual slasher although he did create the entire slasher genre.
You want great horror? Alien. The Poughkeepsie tapes. The original nightmare on elm Street. These films show us a concept over grabbing and eating you. They are about the unknown, and that's what truly terrifies. People aren't scared of the dark because it's dark. They are scared because they don't know what's waiting there.
Feel free to correct me if I missed something
On a serious note though, I genuinely detest your attitude. You aren't the arbiter of quality, so don't pretend you have some high ground on the subject and can judge people over a film.
Or they make passionless, jumpscare filled trash to appeal to brainlets.
OP if you want decent horror movies, I recommend
Evil dead(2013)
Sinister
Blair witch (original)
Texas chainsaw massacre
Strangers
REC
The decent
The Ring
I never said that at all. It is an above average slasher flick. Wish I could totally hope for because it created the entire genre.
And I love John Carpenter he's probably my second favorite director after Paul verhoeven. I mean the thing is amazing. They live. I'll even go so far as to say vampires was an amazing movie. Mostly because no one can choose scenery like James Woods.
Halloween is a very good movie. That isn't horror though. Now you take a look at the films I listed and you compare them to Halloween. Why was alien revered so much as a horror film? You didn't know what exactly was happening from any moment to another and the panic the characters feel is transmitted to the viewer because they also are confused and scared.
I dare say jaws was a better horror movie than Halloween. It screwed up an entire generation of people. if you say you don't know what least one person who's afraid when they go in a pool that there's a trapdoor where a shark is going to come out and eat them, I will tell Winona Ryder on you. Because that's actually a phobia she has.
And horror is defined as a feeling of fear shock or dread. Which are elements that a good horror movie delivers.
I also said that Halloween got really close to being a horror movie. Which would have made it one of the best horror movies ever, if it had actually carried fear, shock, or dread.
they explain exactly who and what Michael Myers is. you know he's a very large man with a proclivity for very pointy objects. At no point in time are you actually scared of him because you can look at him in point and say you really walk slow. I'm just going to keep Pace with you and go up the street and maybe find some cops or something.
If you call Halloween horror, then yes I am going to be insulting towards you. Because Halloween is exactly what Friday the 13th from 3 till forever turned into.
The horror of Halloween comes from a hybrid of the believable evil of mankind, supernatural undertones, and suspense. Michael is a stalking killer, and pure evil. He isn't some drowned kid defending his home, he simply does what he does. That's why Halloween separates itself from other slashers, Michael himself is a complete mystery and his behavior is frightening. Pretend it's just a film about a slow moving slasher all you want, it only shows your own lack of understanding and how full of ♥♥♥♥ you are.
So you can very well be insulting towards me, but I'm not the pseudo-intellectual "cinephile" that can't even wrap his head around Halloween. That's really what gets under my skin, you think so highly of yourself that you'd insult people for thinking a critically acclaimed legend of horror is horror. How full of yourself do are you?
You to realize that explain exactly who and what Michael Myers is in the very first movie. Pretty much before the whole scene with him on the top of the car. Lumos even explains that during the transfer Michael is just pure evil and a killing machine. they even explain why he's doing what he's doing.
The you never know where Michaels going to pop up is literally the definition of jump-scare trope. And good horror movies can use that to excellent effect. Halloween does it exceptionally well.
but it is a scary slasher flick and not true horror. Which is the only distinction that I'm applying.
Me like Halloween
Halloween good movie
Excellent scary slasher film
Not horrifying however. You don't want to be condescending? No
People that think Halloween isn't just a great film but also a horror movie are absolutely wrong. Great movie yes. Horror no.
Just because the film is iconic doesn't mean people should defend it for what it isn't.
My problem isn't that you don't consider Halloween a horror film, I know people who don't like it and I don't care, everyone's got a different opinion on something. My problem is you treat it as a matter of fact and belittle people who disagree, and that attitude gets under my skin.
Ooooooh creepy clowns scary!
There are some good ones -
Evil dead 2
The thing
Rec
Alien
Dawn of the dead (the 70's one)
Day of the dead
The Shining
Jacob's ladder
Fright night
Brain dead
The only movies out of those which i think are actually creepy are The shining and Jacob's ladder, the rest are just cool movies.
I prefer action thrillers they tend to have better acting, characters and plots.
Also i don't like Halloween, i've never understood what all the fuss was about. John Carpenter made much better movies like The thing and They live.
The last good horror i saw was Green Room and i don't even know if it's classed as a horror really. It was tense and genuinely shocking in parts. Better than The conjuring which was one of the most boring movies i've ever seen. Annabelle was ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ too.
