Why do (almost) all horror movies suck?
There's like 10 good horror movies that I can watch over and over again, but other than that it's just an over surplus of ♥♥♥♥. It pisses me off because it's one of my favorite genres...

I can relate.

The horror films I tend to watch over and over again are Nightmare on Elm Street and Friday the 13th series and even those have a big mix of terrible ones.

The Thing I can watch over and over again.
Halloween 1
The new IT (1 and 2) weren't bad I liked them.
Get Out
The Shining
Scream 1
Trick or Treat was really good too.
Alien and Aliens
Saw 1 and 2
Killer Clowns from Outerspace
Screamers 1
Dawn of the Dead original and remake
Night of the Living Dead original
Bird Box
Evil Dead

ugh yea I went throw a list of horror films and out of like 200 those are the only ones I liked....
I might add Texas Chainsaw Massacre in there too I suppose... but yeah when you look at it there really isn't much good ones worth rewatching.

And I've seen A LOT of horror films.
At this point I think I prefer to just watch Kill Count on Youtube for horror movies so I get the whole picture of whats happening without wasting the full hour and a half on most of them...

Yeah, I'd definitely agree with most of those. Some I'd add are:

The Conjuring 1/2 (they have their problems but James Wan does atmosphere like no one else)
Insidious (first half is incredible, then it's like Usain Bolt handed the baton to the special olympics kid)
The Babadook (actual ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ masterpiece)
The Witch (less actual scares, but a feeling of dread that sticks with you)
It Fallows

See I've seen both of the Conjurings, I liked them but not enough to watch them again.
Insidious same feeling.

Babadook I liked quite a bit but i dont know just didn't have a rewatch flair for me.
Witch I haven't seen actually.

And It Follows was really good, I actually just completely forgot about it.

I just re-watched The Witch recently, and ♥♥♥♥... It's really great. It can be a bit hard to fallow with the old english dialogue, but just put on subtitles if you have to. The performances are chilling... It's on netflix right now

Ah, well I believe you gave me my movie for the night. I'll try to remember to come back and say how I liked it or not like it.

The Witch was more horrifying in it's portrayal of people hopelessly lost in their fear of god and such. It was crazy.

There is a bunch of good indie horror on Netflix and Amazon, though.
I might try out Shudder and see what that's about too.

Quality of movies is deteriorating in general, not just horror. I have really hard time actually liking anything released last few years.

Because they resort to stupid contrivances, stupid characters, stupid decisions to force the plot. Nothing feels real, and so you feel no danger.

Go watch the original 1973 Wickerman to see how its done.

Lack of good element. There's still some pretty good horror movies, you just have to look hard enough.

The people making horror movies aren't necessarily good writers or skilled filmmakers so they frequently don't know how to create tension or believably make a scary antagonist or intriguing conflict.

A long time ago the genre became a reliable source of money because they appeal to kids who haven't seen enough films to know quality or appreciate the craft and originality. Which is why it is completely full of hacks. (Kind of like how fans like Kojima) And horror fans accept it. In what other genre could Rob Zombie become a sought after commodity?

House of 1000 corpses is a classic though, I mean come on...

Horror died after the 90's, now it's just the occasional good horror film.

I think that most treat the horror genre like porn. They know what many fans want, they provide only what they want in the most shallow way possible, many people watch those movies anyway and they get their money so...
Most movies suck anyway, but with horror it is more noticeable because they make those movies in a similar way to porn. "I know what you are asking for, I will give you only what you are asking fo, take this crappy movie and don't bother me any furthe"

Reminds me of Ubisoft's approach to games.

Modern horror films just use the jump out and scare you tactic. It's cheap, easy, and repeatable. But if not I quality.

The classics use atmosphere, and storyline, to psychologically ware you down.

I think that's the main difference in today's horror movies. They just seem like the same thing over and over again. Just jump out scary. No real story, no real plot.
hedy 2019년 10월 2일 오전 7시 24분
Damn, I wish I had that much confidence to watch at least one whole horror movie.

People are running out of ideas, plain and simple. At this point, horror movies are pretty much just a series of loosely-linked jumpscares with the typical cliffhanger ending so that if they magically make a profit off the movie, a sequel might (read: won't) come out later.

Just gotta look for the few gems hidden within, the rest is trash.
