Are you supposed to take sunglasses off during the pledge or national anthem?
I know people are supposed to remove their hats while saying the pledge or when they're playing the national anthem, but what about sunglasses? Are you supposed to remove those as a sign of respect?

Nope. No law says you have to.

No law says you have to remove your hat or hood either. It's just considered respect.

Respect has been dead for decades. It's buried right next to common sense.

I don't think there's a hard and fast rule, but anything obscuring the head or face is usually an etiquette faux-pas unless you have a reason to wear them. And some people do. It is important to remember that all other individuals in a gathering or crowd are individuals, just like oneself. Some might be blind, light-sensitive, or even... FOREIGNERS.

the most awkward moment of my life was standing for the US national anthem and actually knowing all the words. i am british. AMA

edit: and i did it because otherwise i might start a fight. also i only stand for my own because otherwise i might start a fight. fear of the consequences of being or doing different is a sad aspect of certain kinds of nationalism and you never know if one of those sad aspects is sat right next to you

remove your sunglasses if they are placed in your forehead or atop the head.
if you are wearing them on your eyes, removal is optional.

you can also place your right hand on your OWN left breast, NOT on the beautiful woman beside you, when singing the national anthem.

is the right one okay too?
sure, but the left side is more natural placement. it is a little awkward when placed at the right.

actually you can place your right hand: dead center, left, or right side of the breast. i usually placed mine at the left side (so i can count my heart beat per minute while singing).
i always thought you needed to remove any aricles of clothing so i remove my socks and my toe nails during the pledge. my undies only come off if children arent presnect because im not a pedophile.

It’s more your hat and or hood than anything else. Unless it’s a religious reason why you can’t (Orthodox Jews for instance have to keep their hair covered) it’s considered taboo, but not against the law. Sunglasses don’t matter though because some people have to wear them to be able to actually see.

How are you supposed to look super bad ass patriotic if you take your sunglasses off?

covering the top of your head has symbolic meaning. in christianity women are supposed to cover their heads in church and men should uncover it.

sunglasses aren't seen as head covering anywhere. it's common in social contact to take off your shades and look someone in the eye. but for showing respect no church, ceremony or celebration has you taking off your shades.

so no, you don't take off your shades when showing respect to a flag, yes you do if you are showing respect to a person.

I’m the type of person who wears my sunglasses to sleep.

So no. I don’t. Rocking out with the American Flag Bandana and Sunglasses.
