Play on controller since movement in stick is harder. I rather have a scarred up thumb then a sore wrist.

You can play on anything really. I have a friend who plays mainly on a keyboard, and he's damn good.

No, they say you cannot beat the best players without it and I'm not sure about that, I'm not a competitive player, but a normal controller is fine enough for most players anyway.
I don't know if arcade stick are really better or maye it's just that the most advanced players are too used to them because they often play those games at the arcades, but if you are asking this question then it means you for sure don't need one, at least for now.

It depends on charactersand games too imo. I'm sure that a character like Guile is much easier to control with a keyboard than Zangief.
And probably Mortal kombat games are easier with a keyboard than Street fighter games.

Dualshock controllers work perfectly for fighting games. Avoid Microsoft controllers, those have bad D-PADs.

Are you asking if an arcade stick is necessary? If so no, but if you want to ever use one it would be easier to start with it earlier, because if you get really good on a gamepad you're going to feel terrible for a while after switching to a stick.

I favor an arcade stick for fighters. I can use a controller just fine. Been using one since SNES days for fighters. But if I have a choice I prefer to use what I learned on.

I am still a beast at Soul Calibur. Of course that was when I was working at namco designing their arcade kits. They put me in as a ringer in the soul edge tournament that was connected to rumble in the Bronx. Taki ftw!!!
