Which games have the best magic system and spellcasting for mages?

Oblivion, Skyrim. Every other ARPG game.

The Magicka series allows you to "create" your own spells by combining several elements.

Arx Fatalis has an interesting casting system. The games a bit dated and clunky though, which is a shame since I love the games concept.

Dark Messiah of Might and Magic has few spells but they can be used in interesting ways. (you can cause enemies to slip over a patch of ice created from the games ice spell).

Dragons Dogma has been praised for it's magic system being a bit over the top. (like summoning full sized tornadoes).

Wizard of Legend has very enjoyable magic based combat, sadly the rest of the game is pretty shallow.

Lastly, here's a game coming out in 2 hours of the time of this post that looks very interesting.

I've played Noita for a bit and I can definitely say it is a very satisfying and interesting "mage" game. It is in early access though and it feels quite early still.

Morrowind's spell casting and alchemical systems are the far better than the Elder Scrolls sequels. Some of the potions and enchanting spells you can create are gamebreakingly overpowered if you level up enough.

This^ and "gamebreakingly" really is the best word for it as a powerful enough spell can actually crash the game. I mean, its not easy, but totally possible to do. Kind of hard to beat that.
I would definitely second magica. In addition to being an incredibly interesting spell system, it's also some of the most fun to have accidents in.

Only if you heavily mod the magicka system.

Age of Wonders II and Shadow Magic.

Probably the Divinity series? Haven't really tried it yet.

I think Skyrim has some of the best necromancy, but nobody's built a real frankenstein simulator yet.

Eternal Darkness is the most appealing and satisfying to me, but it's limited.

Jedi Knight series.

Force-push near a ledge, force-choke in midair over the ledge, then force-lightning that bastard as you let him drop, all while running.

Not to mention the best lightsaber combat of any Star Wars game ever.

Man...I'm going to have to reinstall those games. Wonder if you can edit in widescreen?

If I remember, I believe you can. Hell, I have the very first KOTOR running in widescreen, so Jedi Knight should be possible.

Oblivion if spell crafting is your thing, nothings better than whipping up a spell that causes 30 seconds of paralysis while also dealing constant fire damage.

For straight up mage gameplay though, Dragons Dogma can't be beaten. Wanna conjure a massive tornado to suck up a horde of goblins? How about impaling dragons with a glacier or bombarding a Chimera with asteroids? If you like getting up close an personal, conjure a whip made of lighting and go Castlevania on some mother ♥♥♥♥♥♥. And that's just from ONE magic class, there are still 2 other insane magic classes that are arguably even more powerful.

I don't really remember the magic in South Park.

I do remember that it was always best to have butters as your partner because his professor chaos special wipe the floor with damn near everything. combine that with that chakram that hits all the enemies, sometimes multiple times, with some nasty enchantment stickers on it, and pretty much all I did was spam it and butters.
it was farts and funny things like that played it last year so forget
