Schnitzel Dilemma
I really enjoy eating schnitzel but I always feel guilty of the murder of either a baby calf (veal) or an intelligent pig (pork). It really messes with my head. I don't get to eat it very often though.

On one hand meat is meat and we are omnivores.

On the other hand I feel responsible for supporting an industry of killing animals for my plate that I wouldn't really want to if I'd met them.

My mouth waters just thinking of a delicious serving of jagerschnitzel with spaetzle along with a decent stout.

If an animal is somewhat intelligent or can be kept as a pet then I feel bad to eat it.

I'm not a big meat eater but occasionally I feel the urge to be a carnivore.

Pretty fake dilemma. You can't change anything, "poor murdered animals" will be eaten anyway or rot in the dumpster. So stop pitying creatures that were born to die and become meat and shift your attention to things you can at least influence.

How do you know if someone eats meat?
Don’t worry, they’ll tell you!!

I would like to give you something to think about.

If it wasn't called "meat", would that change how you feel about it?

Let me give you an example. Some people eat dog. This can quite understandably evoke disgust. But notice what we call it. We don't have a separate word for it. We just say "dog". Contrast this with "pork", or "bacon", or "beef". Notice how we avoid saying "pig" or "cow". And what if we get more specific? What if we say "I'm going to eat THAT pig over there.", or "You see THAT specific cow? I'm going to eat her baby.".

Nope, we say "meat", or "beef", or "veal". This reflects and reinforces a disconnection from what we are doing.

A big exception to this is chicken. We'll proudly say things like "I love chicken!", and everybody understands this to mean that you like to eat chickens. Apparently chickens suck and nobody cares what happens to them. Same with turkey, or duck. We just don't care about birds, I guess. They aren't mammals.

Point is, language stems from perception but it can also affect it. Eating venison sounds almost classy compared to eating a deer, but it's the exact same thing. Eating caviar vs eating fish eggs. Eating escargot vs eating snails. Same things, different names.

People have gotten soft and disconnected from reality. At the very least, people are made uncomfortable by reality, and the language appears to reflect that disconnection or discomfort, but it can also help enforce or perpetuate it.
Lovely story, but only works in English. The nobility spoke French after 1066 (boeuf et porc), the peasants spoke English and raised cows and pigs.

Also, until relatively recently (well into the industrial revolution) and well after this distinction in language, most people held chickens and raised a pig on scraps for the winter and were well aware where meat came from, regardless of what it was called.

Likewise, caviar means eggs in early Persian and escargot means snail in medieval French. They were named for what they are, and that then transcended the language when it was introduced to a new area in an age without Google translate.

@OP: veal is made from males born from dairy cattle. Being raised to the point of becoming veal is already extending their lifespan. Make of that what you will, but if you want to stop veal, stop using dairy.

Maybe you should turn yourself into a schnitzel & let the animals eat you, that way you'd be even.

I can't think of anything else that I feel guilty about to be honest. I'm fine with the rest of me. After reading some posts it does seem silly to feel bad about eating food industry animals.
I just feel very strongly against consuming what I could imagine as someone's potential pet.

thats understandable... but how common is it for u to see someone with a cow, pig or chicken as a pet ?

because when i hear the word " pet " i think of dogs and cats.
