The only time I hate them are when they move. Screw you map, I don't want that. I want it static, in one spot on the UI, and available to be on or off with clicking the damn M key. You know, M FOR MAP.
If you mean more for multiplayer games, that's kind of up to each game to put it in right. Maybe they should be 'when you've explored most of the map you get to see it next time you play it'.
Overall, I don't see any problem with the usage of minimaps in general.
I love mini-maps.... I get lost easy and have to find where my butt is, lol
*Sigh*....
In Borderlands games, when getting around (just like in GTA games, or Kingdoms of Amalur) I tended to be able to cross an entire map without even looking at the main screen. I think it takes away from the element of exploration and immersion when all you're doing is guiding a little dot around a 2-D maze in the corner of the screen.
Those things that'll still basically work when the electricity is gone, and there's no phone service.
In shooters (especially PvP and high speed/ fast paced ones) a minimap is a must have.
It allows you to see enemy locations.
And more than that, it tells you surroundings, distance, where team mates are, where your enemies are, where theyre going to be, and where they were.
A minimap is objectively one of the most important parts of the game, because it feeds you more information than your limited scope of vision can provide. (Unlike in reality, where you have a large field of vision, better sound placement, awareness, feeling vibrations and their directions (sound, tremors etc.))
If you're talking about other games, I don't know much about them, I don't play them all to much.
However, I personally like a minimap no matter what I play, so long as it's implimented properly.
I don't really think it takes away from the game at all, it's your choice if you want to look at it.
However, if you want to make the complaint that it's distracting, I couldn't disagree with that, so maybe at the least, add a minimap toggle like GTA5 has.
