Mini-maps are outdated
I always get annoyed now whenever I see a mini-map in a new game, as it is almost always makes no sense in the context of the game and can be a really cheap way to find enemies. Also, I think that mini-maps make the players look at a little map in the corner of the screen, rather than taking in the environments of the actual game. IMO, if game devs want to help players in letting know where things are, then they should just use a compass in the game, as it a much better alternative to mini-maps.

But that's just my opinion, what are your thoughts?

I love my mini maps.

The only time I hate them are when they move. Screw you map, I don't want that. I want it static, in one spot on the UI, and available to be on or off with clicking the damn M key. You know, M FOR MAP.

If you mean more for multiplayer games, that's kind of up to each game to put it in right. Maybe they should be 'when you've explored most of the map you get to see it next time you play it'.

I played an MMO that only had a compass once, it was horrible (Though traveling in a group for like an hour on a donkey trying to find a desert city and then end up being followed by giant scorpions was kinda worth it. The city turned out to be crap though.)
Can't say that I'd get much use out of a compass compared to a minimap. Between the two, a minimap seems objectively better, since it also typically functions as a compass as well.

Overall, I don't see any problem with the usage of minimaps in general.

Why? If it's done like you would take out acutal paper map irl, then I would prefer this over a mini map in the corner.

In GTA V, I feel like I would learn the city better if it were turned off. That was certainly the case with the wonderful puzzler called Supraland. Commenters asked him if he would make a minimap, and he said "no chance" because his game, his philosophy. I agree. In about 80 hours in GTA V (this PC only, not counting 360, maybe another 100 hours), I should know most of Los Santos by now. Yet, I don't. I barely know how to find a Pay n Spray from any of my cribs. And I blame the mini-map and the GPS-line.

In Borderlands games, when getting around (just like in GTA games, or Kingdoms of Amalur) I tended to be able to cross an entire map without even looking at the main screen. I think it takes away from the element of exploration and immersion when all you're doing is guiding a little dot around a 2-D maze in the corner of the screen.
This would be a great YouTuber challenge. Pick a game to beat using only the onscreen mini-map. Tape off the rest of your screen. I bet there's a few. Just mash (A) until the red dots disappear, go to the yellow (!), quest given, etc.
Now im thinking of a minimap combined with a compass at the same time. at the top of the screen.

I guess "gameplay flow" would have been a better term than "immersion". Especially when driving a vehicle in a game, having to pause the momentum and toggle a fullscreen map is just annoying.
Ah, I see what you mean. On the other hand It's some way to train memory ;) and it's easier when there are proper road signs in the game.

I actually kinda wish games nowadays still used paper maps. It adds onto the game to use compasses and paper static maps. A actual challenge to get where you need to be.

Those things that'll still basically work when the electricity is gone, and there's no phone service.
In what type of game?

In shooters (especially PvP and high speed/ fast paced ones) a minimap is a must have.
It allows you to see enemy locations.
And more than that, it tells you surroundings, distance, where team mates are, where your enemies are, where theyre going to be, and where they were.
A minimap is objectively one of the most important parts of the game, because it feeds you more information than your limited scope of vision can provide. (Unlike in reality, where you have a large field of vision, better sound placement, awareness, feeling vibrations and their directions (sound, tremors etc.))

If you're talking about other games, I don't know much about them, I don't play them all to much.
However, I personally like a minimap no matter what I play, so long as it's implimented properly.

I don't really think it takes away from the game at all, it's your choice if you want to look at it.
However, if you want to make the complaint that it's distracting, I couldn't disagree with that, so maybe at the least, add a minimap toggle like GTA5 has.

Or you're in Wyoming. Same difference.
I like how saints row handled it. By 3 they flat out tell you "Check your phone GPS". I believe it's the first thing you do after the intro mission. Open map, set waypoint, drive.
I'm sorry if this is a bit off topic, but regarding compasses, I really wish games would use a top down compass rather than the horizontal "Skyrim compass", for a lack of better term. I know everyone wants it because PUBG used it, but a top down compass is so much easier to navigate with and makes it easier to learn the surroundings.
