But please play HL1 beforehand, it's story based.
And the postal games are just trash.
HL2 is kind of a mid point between a oldschool shooter (Doom, Quake) and a modern shooter (Bioshock, Metro) It offers pretty good gunplay, interesting and varied levels, and a campaign experience that feels more adventure like than shooter like. The main things i didn't like about HL2 were the vehicle sections which lasted too long and it's story felt a little too light hearted and cheesy in some places. I personally didn't like HL2 as much as HL1 but it is still a pretty solid shooter campaign imo, and is worth checking out at some point.
Also HL2 does have a sort of demo called Lost Coast, which will give you a feel on what the combat is like as well as a taste of what the "puzzles" are like.
Postal 2 however was really fun to play
