Why do People hate Sword Art Online so much?
Seriously, what were people expecting that made them hate it so much? I enoyed the series; cliche tropes and all. Its not the worst animated nor does it have the worst plot ever.

People have opinions

I thought it was boring, generic and the plot was pretty bland, but I'm not exactly an anime expert myself

....I'm at an impasse here.

See, I actually liked the anime, but on the other hand, I don't have a single good thing to say about it :D

Maybe I just liked Asuna being a protagonist of her own.

I think it's good, but I've only seen a couple episodes from the second and third seasons.

Back when I used to sort of watch Anime I thought season 1 was pretty alright, had a few cliches here and there.

Season 2 was a f***ing dumpster fire though.

It's...well, what can I say. A time-passer. The reason it gained traction was one simple question: "If dying in a VR game meant you died for real, what would happen?".

It kinda went from there, grabbing all the tropes/cliches it could.

sounds boring and something they took from inception :M4Sherman:

It was ok - nothing too special. Log Horizon on the other hand did what SAO wanted to do and then some. SAO season two is almost as bad as Tokyo Ghoul √A.

Except that SAO is a year older than Inception.

...then again, neither of them is actually the first who asked that question.
Meh. It got highly overhyped at release, as it was massively popular in Japan. It carries over a LOT of the stereotypical tropes that plague anime, and if you combine that over abundance with the oddly dis-appropriate disgust the anime "Fans" have of other people liking anime, it was a festive crap show waiting to happen.

I personally very much enjoy the series, so much so that I went ahead and read the light novels and all the side stuff. The worst thing I can point to about the series is that how it still hits me with the cheap emotional manipulation, and that with how the Light Novels were written, then translated into a liner series that they should have probably pushed each story arc out about another 6 episodes, Or at least for the first arc. They leave a LOT of actually important character development stuff out.

It's just a middling, average series I happen to enjoy. If you want to watch the series with a LOT of the issues fixed, go watch SAO abridged.

Its essentially a show about getting stuck in a vr world that's so real in your mind that if you die in the game you die real life. The character is a level below Jotaro in pure deus ex machina wins, but its pretty good anyway.

Bad story based around a bad game

"SAO was a huge hit! It sold 15,000 copies!"

I never got past episode one with Tokyo Ghoul, it just seemed too much gore. Everyone bleed way too much, it was like a b grade movie.

Well, i'm an old gore hound and people at the time were saying that show was a good horror anime so I had to see it. But like with SAO season two, TG's season two was really disjointed to say the least.

I guess in context asking people to put their brains in a device that simulates the damage you take to your real body is a lot ask people for a new genre. The plot was trope checklist, but more meh than bad.
