aesthetically pleasing low-poly 3d
You know what i'm talking about?

Games like Half life 1, Toy commander, Etc.

Low-quality but softish textures (filtered) and often pleasing gradients, pixelatedness can be cool too

Nice models

Simple colors

Pretty sky textures, fluffy clouds

Simple reflections

My best:

Games like monkey ball had the same sort of feel but more advanced graphics

There was this golden era of pretty low-poly 3d graphics on PCs in the 80s and early 90s in the demo scene on Amiga, and then again in actual games from the late 90s to 2001

Am I crazy or are there other people who like this?

Is there a real aesthetic here or just a deep-seated nostalgia?

As a matter of fact, I do somewhat like the old feeling graphics. Makes me think of what they must've felt like when they accomplished it and thought how good it looked back then.

ah well actually i've been getting into some modern opengl programming recently

Haven't used opengl since 3.1

Maybe i like the aesthetic because my re-learning opengl entails me seeing a lot of this stuff

Damn it is so cool seeing stuff like this. I mean that may be because I love N64 games, Sega Dreamcast, Playstation 1 and so on but yeah these kind of things get me super excited inside. I really love older 3D graphics always so colorful and mystic looking a lot of times.

You're not the only one who's like this. I have a fondness for most 90s pre rendered graphics from games such as Diablo and Abes Oddysee. There's just something about them that gives off a mood that you don't get from modern games.

I also kind of like software rendering in games like Quake over OpenGL, once again it gives off a certain mood that modern games can't seem to capture.

goldsrc and source are technically different engines even though source is heavily based off goldsrc

I think he actually means the source engine before all the special effects were introduced

That half life 2 demo thing

with the island

standalone game but one level

that game introduced the changes

EDIT: HL2: Lost Coast

tbh the only visual details i really care about are anti aliasing and lighting
even then im ok playing games with simple lighting

Lighting means a lot to me at times. I can take lighting over very high graphics more often. Star Fox Adventures still looks good to me. And the way they did the rooms in Donkey kong 64 was good to. Even though in Donkey Kong 64 I do not think it was real lighting but a illusion made by making it when you walked on a certain piece of ground your characters changed colors more to match it.

It's kinda weird I think Borderlands 1 on PC still looks good even though the models/textures are dated simply because Unreal engine 3 has good lighting. Same thing with KF1.

The power of lighting is pretty powerful in video games. A lot of devs look past it though I think. If you have lighting and music that can be considered magical then all you need left now is some ok graphics and gameplay to make a masterpiece. Can skip the story if you want. But hell if you add a story that is good or decent that is a plus.
