pS3 storage questions

I reletively recently bought a fat PS3, and while I don't THINK it has any overheating problems yet (no YLOD or the like), it has froze on startup a few times, making me reboot it into safe mode and "restore [the] file structure" to fix it. From what I can tell after looking online, this means the Hard Drive I bought it with is failing and I need to replace it. I have some questions I thought someone here might know before proceding:

-I am trying to not spend more than I need to as of late, and was debating whether to get a large *Hard drive or a small SSD (probably 64gb or so). However, even with the few games (physical, but many requiring partial installs) and one movie I have on it, it seems to already use about 70GB of space. I can delete the movie, but about how many PS3 games on average can fit on 64GB?

-I have a few extra flash drives and SD cards lying around (again, fat model, so it has SD/CF/Memorystick ports and 4 USB slots). What exactally can I store on them? I assumes you can use them for media, but probably not for installs (although if I can, that would be great). What about saves, patches, updates, and DLC though? Can I use them for that? Also, is the reader standard, SDHC, or SDXD?

-The main reason I want an SSD is because I hear they produce less heat than even a 5400rpm HDD (fat PS3's are known for overheating and I want to minimise the chances of it happening). However, I remember looking into getting an SSD for a different console and learned that consoles may read/write to them more than they should and that can drastically reduce the SSD's life. Can anyone clarify that as to whether it's true or not, and tell me approxemately how long an average SSD's lifespan is?

*If I choose getting an HDD, it will be the same size as the current one. Even though it's a 60gb model, the previous owner gave it a 250gb 5400rpm drive at some point.

SDD are more expensive. But, if you have the money, go ahead and buy a 250gb Samsung SDD

I looked a little more online and are you certain SSD's are cooler than HDD's? I've always bought HDD's for my PC because I prefer space over speed, so I have very little first hand experiance with SSD's. I thought they were known to be cooler, but I've looked on forums and people seem to have mixed experiances. The only reason I'm concidering an SSD is because of the fat PS3's tendancy to overheat, and if they aren't any cooler in practice, I'd rather just get an HDD with more space.

I put a 1TB Seagate SSHD 7200RPM in my PS3 super slim, I was aware of the whole 5400RPM/7200RPM debate regarding heat but I used my PS3 in my summer house on an open glass shelved TV stand so it was well ventilated and never had any issues.

As for SSD's they do run cooler than mechanical drives, if heat is a serious concern why not setup the drive outside the PS3..

You could then use a full fat 3.5" 7200RPM to get better performance without the cost of an SSD.

That video isn't a great example, I have seen those that have used braided extension cables and trimmed holes in the HDD blanking plate for the cables and put the drive in an enclosure so it looks like a standard external USB HDD.
