SCP itself stands for "Special Containment Protocol" but is often mis-identified as the Foundation's catchphrase, "Secure Contain Protect". Either is basically right.
There are over 3000 or so entries now. There are also different organizations within the mythos, such as the Chaos Insurgency, who believe in using SCPs to advance humanity, and are a splinter-group of the main SCP foundation.
If you want to read up on some very popular SCP entries, I would suggest the following.
SCP-173 - "The Statue", commonly referred to by the internet as "Peanut". He's basically a statue similar to that of the "Weeping Angels" from "Doctor Who" in that he moves very, very fast, but can only move when you take your eyes off of him, or blink, at which point he snaps your neck upon getting close.
SCP-096 - "The Shy Guy". The polar opposite of 173, this guy is harmless until some unlucky dude looks at his face, or a photo of him. You can only view drawings of him I think, photos of any kind trigger him just like looking at him will. Once triggered he will run very fast to the ends of the earth, or even outside of it, to get to the one who stared at it's face, and claw them to shreds, presumably eating the corpse.
SCP-106 "The Old Man". Commonly referred to by the internet as "Uncle Larry", this tall lanky pitch-black man can walk through walls, has a personal pocket dimension to throw his prey in, and likes to hunt humans. The Foundation itself can't permanently keep him locked up, and has a special recall protocol to lure him back to his cell in the event of a breach, they take a class-D, basically a prisoner (usually death-row inmate) and break his or her femur, broadcasting the sound over the facility intercom, which lures 106 as he enjoys human pain and suffering.
SCP-049 "The Plague Doctor". A Rather famous SCP commonly associated with the Youtuber "TheVolgun" (Voice Actor for the Doctor in the SCP Video Game). He looks like a Plague Doctor of the middle ages, only his touch instantly kills any living creature. That's not the worst part though, he resurrects them as zombies, designated 049-2.
SCP-682, "The Invincible Lizard" (Or something akin to that), basically an evil lizard that adapts to anything used to attempt to kill it. It knows nothing but death, and has killed everything thrown at it. How the foundation even captured the thing, I don't know.
Also, if you want to have a laugh, read up on Doctor Bright. He's the SCP Universes' version of Deadpool essentially. A Scientist who wears an SCP Object that transfers his soul into whomever wears it. He's died countless times and quite possibly has lost his sanity by this point. He also invented a Chainsaw Cannon at one point too, to use against 682, in vain.
It's a secret foundation that tracks down and contain any individuals, entities, locations, and objects that violate natural law. Their elite special force operatives, called "Mobile Task Forces", are mobilized to deal with specific threats or situations that sometimes exceed the operational capacity or expertise of regular field personnel.
