60MPH vs 120MPH (or equivalent in KM/H) [SOLVED]
I'm not really familiar with measuring speed in terms of MPH nor KM/H

I was wondering if 120MPH is double the actual relative speed of 60MPH?

Same question for KM/H really..is 120KM/H double the actual relative speed of 60KM/H



Meaning, would it take half the time to brake to a full stop when going 60MPH than it takes when going 120MPH?




EDIT: The reason I ask this, is because from the videos I've seen on YouTube, and from personal experience from being a passenger in a car (and driver)..it seems that 120MPH isn't really a 100% increase in relative speed from 60MPH. It seems more like 66% or 88%.

They are both the same relative speed. Those are literally the number of miles/kilometers you travel in an hour. 120 is twice as fast as 60, for either one.

If you verse yourself in Newton's laws of motion your understand it better.
Well you go twice the distance at 120 MPH that you go at 60 MPH in the same time, so I'd assume it's a 100% increase in speed. Because if two cars were racing, one going at exactly 60 and the other at 120, the 120 car would be twice as far as the 60 car at all times unless something interfered. Or at least I think that's how it works...0.0

Just checked an online distance calculator, and yeah, that is how it works

In all seriousness though, if you were to watch 2 cars in above mentioned situation in a vacuum with no extra variables (i.e EXACTLY those two speeds) you would definitely see on car twice as far as the other. Now if you want to talk about depth perception and all that ♥♥♥♥ forget that

Well that's a different story...I doubt the times are exactly proportional but yeah it makes complete sense that accelerating from fast to faster takes more time that zero to fast. Maybe that's why it seems weird? Is that what you were talking about this whole time

Probably. For some reason I thought that 120MPH wasn't actually double the speed of 60MPH, but 100KM/H was double the speed of 50KM/h.


Does the acceleration of vehicles scale like that though? Does accelerating from 60MPH to 120MPH actually take half/double the time of 0MPH to 60MPH? They're both the same amount of MPH in difference.

0MPH and 60MPH have a difference of 60MPH. 60MPH and 120MPH have a difference of 60MPH.

If your not going to bother studying newtons laws of motion then stop asking dumb questions as even if i answered both your questions you still wouldnt have learnt anything.

0MPH and 60MPH have a difference of 60MPH. 60MPH and 120MPH have a difference of 60MPH.
I looked and can't find anything that talks about that. But think about something: acceleration is very different from car to car. A car that has a top speed of 120 will accelerate to 120 very slowly, but a car that has a top speed of 200 will accelerate to 120 much quicker. So I doubt acceleration scales like that. What I can tell you with cerainty is that acceleration from 0-60 is quicker than 60-120. Because let's face it, acceleration isn't constant, and the same applies to KPH

I've looked them up, and none of the three laws seem to have anything to do with what I'm talking about. We're not talking about mass vs acceleration. We're not talking about interia, and we're not talking about negative and positive reactions.
